LadyBernkastel reacted to Gyokuyoutama in TIAM: General Gaming edition
Every time I hear a piano solo cover of "Hope" my mind inserts the sound of the cry of seagulls.

Honestly, I don't miss it. Like i want to, message boards basically were my internet experience from the time that i was 12 to the point that I started only visiting here every 5 years. But I feel like they either end up a tightly knit community like ours, where you actually recognize the other posters and have a personality in your head associated with them, or they end up huge, where you're basically talking to an army of faceless nobodies because keeping up with everybody is impossible.
SubSPUF is the only message board i even want to come back to because I miss shitposting here. I'm not sure i would have even joined bigSPUF were I not so bored between classes my freshman year of college that I decided arguing with people about minigun spin-up time was fun. Maybe it's my introverted nature showing, but i don't feel a community that large can have that feeling of unity regardless of the medium that community uses to communicate. Things like missing discussions because you weren't there still happen, and it wasn't uncommon to see multiple threads about the exact same topic on the front page.
If anything, I like the air of chatrooms better. I know this is gonna be hilarious coming at the end of this wall of text, but i don't miss writing paragraphs on message boards. The more free form conversations of chatrooms just feels nicer to me.

I take back what I said about Fortnite. Tetris 99 is unironically the most skill-indexed battle royale right now.

I'm slowly starting to get the suspicion that Bernkastel might actually be a jerk.

Watching the CS:GO community flip their shit over going F2P is so so nostalgic.

To me, that sounds less like an issue of technology not improving and more of issues endemic in the video game industry. That is, "DO THINGS ASAP I DON'T CARE IF THERE'S BUGS WE HAVE A DEADLINE TO HIT" and just the unfortunate fact that most retro game developers are novices relative to the people that actually developed the retro games they're inspired by. It would be great if more developers took advantage of the technological advantages that we have access to now, but nowadays those new advantages are mostly things under the hood, that only nerds like us give a shit about. It doesn't sell copies to Joe Schmoe that doesn't give a shit. Technological advancement is entirely possible, it would just require a financial incentive on the part of developers, which would require the average person to be more computer literate.

Look GoG, I appreciate the Yuri streak you're on, but what I really want is Umineko and Science Adventure.

I'm curious as to why you say this. Even in the games that do it relatively well, such as Overwatch, I'd still only call the practice mostly harmless. It doesn't add anything of value to any game it's in. Even when discussing server costs for multiplayer games, if games without lootboxes can get by just selling skins directly, I fail to see why these other games can't. At it's worst, it's downright predatory. At least in the days of hiding on-disc content behind dlc packs, you knew what you're getting yourself into. You pay an upfront fee for a specific amount of content. A lootbox system is never added because it adds something to the game; it's added because some suits looked at the mobile market and said "you know, I bet we could get some of that."

Honestly, I blame MOBAs and Overwatch for that one. If there's anything that the success of these games say, it's that people don't want a customizable experience anymore. Even the server browser in Overwatch doesn't add the level of customization that older games offered. PC gaming is slowly killing one of its biggest strengths, and Valve is hardly the first one to do it.
