If you guys really want to look into algorithms, the main one is a ratings algorithm called Glicko-2 which should be the best for our needs. The other major algorithm is basically an algorithm to divide up teams for playoff divisions based on ratings and head-to-head encounters. I don't know how exactly this one should work, but I'll try to explain what I had in mind later.
