OK, since our beloved mod Ian is trying to get this back on track, I'm going to propose a ceasefire. I will shut up about my views on this forum, you guys already know I disagree with just about everything, but I don't see this argument going anywhere, and I'd hate for things to get really nasty, as I enjoy playing tf2 with you guys I very much appreciate the maturity that you guys brought here, I honestly didn't expect it, and for that unspoken insult, I apologize. Raison and Alex, I promise I'll try to look into those links that you provided me about evolution with a clear mind. Pretty much, I'm saying we should agree to disagree and go back to talking about hotwheels.

THey didn't "simply tax more" they ranged from all out persecution of different religions, to subjecting the followers of different religions to being made second rate citizens, with all kinds of penalties on how much property they could own, etc. The stories about the spanish inquisition are largely false. Is there some truth to them? Yes, but nowhere close to what you usually hear about it. could you clarify what you're talking about here? That is absolutely incorrect. The Church was constantly trying to work for the betterment(is that a word? ._.) of the Indians. I can see how this would cause some confusion. Let me clarify things a bit. The Church states that the Pope teaches infallibly under certain conditions. He must be speaking officially. (ex-cathedra) He must pronounce himself on a subject of faith or morals. Infallibility is restricted to questions regarding faith or morals. He must speak as the Vicar of Christ. In his office as Pope, and to the whole Church, to all the faithful throughout the world. He must make clear by certain words his intention to speak ex-cathedra. I hope that clears that up a bit. Lemme get this straight, you criticize me for using a christian website when we were talking about creationism, but when you're bashing the Catholic Church, you're allowed to get a quote from a website with, right under the quote, "More anti-religion"? seriously? It's a 2 way street, pal. And as I said before, Hitler was contradictory in his views of Christianity. Some people thought he was a believer, some, including Goebbels, thought he was anti-christian.

I believe I already said I don't know how God brought around the creation of the world. It could have been through evolution.

The Gallileo thing or the Crusade? It's admitted that they could have handled the Gallileo incident better, we've never claimed to be perfect, but it's also admitted that had Gallileo co-operated more, it would have ended better. Also, the house arrest wasn't nearly as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, he still had all kinds of contacts in Rome, and he was still able to publish whatever he wanted, as long as he left the theory of Copernicanism alone. However, this has been taken by enemies of the Church as "proof" that the Church opposes science. We also are not like protestant's that if you say something against the Bible, we'll start throwing cows everywhere. Here are 2 quotes that might interest you. Saint Albert the Great said: "It very often happens that there is some question as to the earth or the sky, or the other elements of this world, respecting which one who is not a Christian has knowledge derived from most certain reasoning or observation, and it is very disgraceful and mischievous, and of all things to be carefully avoided, that a Christian speaking of such matters as being according to the Christian Scriptures, should be heard by an unbeliever talking such nonsense that the unbeliever, perceiving him to be as wide from the mark as east from west, can hardly restrain himself from laughing."And St. Thomas Aquinas said:"First, the truth of Scripture must be held inviolable. Secondly, when there are different ways of explaining a Scriptural text, no particular explanation should be held so rigidly that, if convincing arguments show it to be false, anyone dare to insist that it still is the definitive sense of the text. Otherwise unbelievers will scorn Sacred Scripture, and the way to faith will be closed to them."

The first Crusade was instigated by the Pope to retake land that the Muslims had conquered, and to put a stop to the brutal persecutions that they were carrying out on Catholic Pilgrims to the Holy Land. Gallileo had a problem, that he was very unwilling to compromise with the Church about his theory (it was a theory back then). The Church only had a problem with him when he started teaching it as a scientific fact, and even then, he had tons of friends in the hierarchy of the Church that urged him to teach it as a theory. Pope Urban VIII told him that the Chruch had never declared Copernicanism to be heretical, and that it would never do so. He (the pope) Urged him to publish his book "Dialogue on the great world systems". However, he refused to publish it as a hypothesis as the Pope instructed him to do so. As a result, he was placed under arrest. I'm a Catholic still, and all of the others I know while acknowledging that there have been dark times in the Church's history, know that a lot of them are myths.

Hitler was also a persecutor of Christians. He used the Christian front to unite the people against the communists, but he was also attacking the Christians. Let's not forget this was a madman. Also, I'm very interested to know where you got that quote about Cardinal Bellarmine. I have one here that doesn't sound like that quote at all. "If there were a real proof that the sun is in the center of the universe, that the earth is in the third heaven, and that the sun does not go round the earth but the earth round the sun, then we should have to proceed with great circumspection in explaining passages of Scripture which appear to teach the contrary, and rather admit that we did not understand them than declare an opinion to be false which is proved to be true. But as for myself, I shall not believe that there are such proofs untill they are shown to me." Sounds like a different attitude from your quote. He doesn't want to believe in the proofs until he sees em? Whats the matter with that?

I kinda meant my arguments attempting to disprove your arguments. The crusades have been shrouded in all kinds of false myths. If you take the time to look closely at them, you'll see a lot is just lies. Did one of the Crusades sack Istanbul (back then Constantinople)? Yes. Was that sanctioned by the Church? Absolutely not. That was instigated by a Venetian doge, who wanted to use the crusading army (I believe it was the 4th crusade, let me check up on that) for his own purposes. Also, the Crusades were actually defensive conflicts fought against Islam. But nobody likes to mention that. If you want to look more into that, I'd recommend this book http://books.google.com/books/about/The_politically_incorrect_guide_to_Islam.html?id=_7RD2jwMU2wCIt's painful to see how many myths are started against the Church. If you believed half of them (I'm guessing Gigolo believes more than that, and maybe you as well) I can see how you think poorly of us, but you have to understand, a lot of that is just plain BS. The Church did NOT condone slavery. The Inquisition was NOT a blood thirsty organization started by the Spanish to root out enemies of the state. The "Dark Ages" of medieval history weren't actually dark ages, and the Church helped with a lot of things, including setting up the university system.Gallileo and Copernicus were NOT persecuted for their beliefs. It goes on and on.

Wait, remind me again of when the Catholic's caused mass genocide? And what do ya mean by "Human progress"? Oh, yeah there is, but I'm not accusing you guys of sticking your fingers in your ears and ignoring my arguments.
