I've played quite a bit and the website does not lie: the only things you can buy are cosmetics and time-savers. You absolutely cannot buy stat-changing gear. You can buy boosts to speed up experience gain to get them, but you cannot buy them.

I've been playing some Firefall while it's been in free beta. Miiiiiight buy the $20 founder's program. Maybe. Maybe the $50 program. Still not sure. There's not terribly much PvE content yet, as they just finished ironing out a bunch of kinks in the PvP system. Still really fun just playing with the different battleframes. I've also been playing a bunch of Pokemon Black 2, rounding up all the endgame content.
