Only thing I would like to add to Tobias' thorough rundown of warding is that lane wards can also be used to keep tabs on and zone out the enemy offlaner with supports, as well as making kills on them easier, due to always having vision. Using the wards like this isn't all that common however, as you've got a limited stock and they're normally of greater value elsewhere.
