I'm having one of those days where the pointlessness of existence is beating down on me, I feel I am worthless and will never do anything worthwhile in my life and frankly putting myself into a coma would be a real good idea right now, if only I could find a somewhat painless way of doing so, that doesn't hurt other people.

In times like these (read: always), I read stupid arguments on Facebook and revel in the fact that, even though I may be awful and worthless, I'm not as bad as the person who posted that opinion.

You can replay them just fine, but you cant deny that knowing 'what will happen/how to solve X' makes the experience far less amazing than the first playthrough.

This. It's not that I don't like replaying them, just like I don't mind rewatching a movie. But the wham effect from twists isn't there the second time, and it leaves me kinda sad because it was so amazing that first time. I want a way to recapture that first time.

  3. I wish there was a way I could just... unexperience certain games. Specifically, the Ace Attorney series. Not because I dislike the experience - it's the opposite. I wish I could go through the games again, without knowing the twists and plots, but alas.

On that note, just got through Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright and wew. Called about half of the finale, but didn't call the most major revelation, so it was An Interesting Time. But now I can never play it again because I know what to do.

Now we can look forward to the Han Solo film.

It's pretty optimistic of you to think there's any reason for anyone to look forward to that.

    TLJ something:

    Spoiler

The entire sequence on Snoke's ship post-Hyperspace scene is everything that is wrong with TLJ, and that's very impressive.

You follow up the breathtaking effect a scene prior with the Raddus cutting a path through the ship, and the entire Snoke throne room sequence, with dues ex BB-8 piloting a half-functional walker with some horribly conspicuous CGI, Captain Product Pusher being somehow even more absolutely worthless than the first time, and the new baggage getting all sappy while the whole thing happens (though it's impressive I remember her being in that scene at all, seeing as I don't think she did anything, and if she did I totally forgot it).

    Spoiler

    I like Rose's actor though.

How's your year been so far, SubSPUF?

I moved back into my college apartment and immediately had to help unclog the toilet!

I rearranged my room to make room for the TV I bought over the holidays. Still looks like a tornado went though it, but there's a TV at the foot of my bed now!

I don't even use the TV that often, much less one in my room, but eh.

If you were to intentionally design a discussion system that was guaranteed to lead to the most horrendous discussions and communities possible, what design choices would you make that Reddit hasn't already done?

Actually, I think the -chan design is pretty much the pinnacle of discussion format and flow. Still breeds some pretty horrendous discussions and communities, but this is the internet we're talking about.

Casino Planet was unnecessary if you ask me. I liked Elvis. The entire space situation seemed to be contrived to make that one scene happen. Imagine being so full of yourself that you forget that you are part of an order that literally has existed by apprentices murdering their masters in creative ways. Admiral Akbar's death was an afterthought. I don't like Leia's face.

    Agreed on all fronts.

Also, for a franchise that loves its cameos,

    Spoiler

they missed a huge opportunity with the actual codebreaker. It should've been Lando. The missed connection angle was great, and showed that not everyone can be trusted, which was a bit of a twist on SW convention, so that can stay, but it's almost criminal and certainly asinine to not use Lando in such a role, especially with how Maz portrayed him - rogue, suave, gambler, etc. The galaxy has always been small. It's kind of Star Wars' thing.

  8. It always astounds me when I find a community for an old game that's still producing content.

Recently got back into X-Wing Alliance for some good ol' space flying simulator fun and was shocked to see that there's still a small but dedicated userbase that's finding new ways to push the engine... and the game came out in 1999. They're still making ships for it. Can't believe it.

I can't wait to see this scene with some high-def screencaps for a sweet background. One of the most striking, and most memorable, scenes in the entire thing.

I also agree with your assessment. Controversial? Yes. Best? No. Worst? Also no.

    Major The Last Jedi spoilers:

    • In the first act the resistance has been pushed back to a hidden base on an ice world.  Finn returns from an off planet mission and tells Leia that he is going to leave the resistance because he is too busy avoiding bounty hunters sent after him by Captain Phasma for his betrayal of the first order.  He can't leave immediately, however, since there is a severe ice storm.  Poe Damaron is trapped in the storm and it is hoped that he will survive until morning when a search can be conducted.  Poe finds shelter in a cave where he fights an ice yeti.
    • Meanwhile Rey is undergoing training by Luke.  Luke insists that she is too old and undisciplined to begin training, but he eventually relents and trains her.  Initially he refrains from showing her any force techniques and instead tries to teach her a philosophy of non-involvement and pacifism.  Rey gets frustrated with him and claims that he has lost his force ability, and in response Luke levitates an entire building using the force.  Rey then immediately does the same thing without training and Luke tells her that she is the most powerful to have ever lived and that she should be training him.
    • Meanwhile on the first order's Homeworld Kylo and Snoke collect the observations of the Sith Probe Holocrons that they have sent to distant quarters of the galaxy in order to find Luke.  Instead they discover the resistance base on the ice world and send out their entire fleet to attack the base, headed up by the ultra-class Star Destroyer Enforcer.  The resistance fights a prolonged battle against First Order AT-AT walkers, delaying them by trench warfare and by tangling the legs of the walkers.  Making use of a planetary ion cannon, much of the resistance fleet manages to push through the First Order's forces and jump through hyperspace to a prearranged rendezvous location.  Finn, Poe, Chewbacca and C-3P0 end up on the Millenium Falcon but are unable to make it to the rendezvous point due to the pursuit of a fierce Mandalorian warrior, who ends up being Boba Fett's female clone (also named Boba Fett).
    • At the same time Rey is receiving visions of a future where Finn, Poe and Chewbacca have been captured and are tortured.  Luke warns her that she must abandon them and complete her training, citing his abandoning of his training as a mistake which nearly allowed the dark side to consume him.  To test her he sends her into an ancient Jedi temple where she sees visions of Kylo Ren and Snoke.  She easily kills both of them in a blind fury.  Seeing this, Luke tells her that she must control her rage lest she fall into the same path that Kylo did.  Rey responds that she doesn't think that there is any difference between the light and dark side of the force, but that Luke is simply trying to control her power because he thinks that she's weak because she's a woman.  Luke apologizes to her and tells her that he now realizes that she has learned the truth of the unity of the force, which no Jedi master ever had even approached before her.  Rey leaves to save her friends.
    • Seeking to avoid Boba Fett, Finn and the others take refuge in a world known as a smuggler's cove, run by the lovable porgs.  The cities here are built high up on the peaks of mountains which are high above the clouds.  While things seem to go well at first due to a prominent smuggler being an old friend of Poe's from his pre-reistance days, it soon turns out that the smugglers have been actively collaborating with the first order, supplying them with kyber crystals.  C-3P0 comments that the amount of crystal could be used to power a superweapon which could take out several solar systems simultaneously.  Our heroes are captured by Boba Fett and tortured.  It is revealed that Snoke is present and he gloats that the purpose of this is to draw Rey into a trap.
    • At the same time the resistance fleet has been discovered by the first order.  Kylo Ren leads an attack against the fleet during which he is able to personally destroy the ship that Leia is on.  But that's okay since Leia is played by a CGI monster.  A mon calamari admiral bravely sacrifices his ship to create a diversion during which the rest of the fleet escapes.
    • Rey arrives to save her friends, and is lured into a manufacturing center by Snoke.  Rey has the upper hand, but then Snoke reveals her friends and threatens to kill them unless Rey surrenders.  She backs off and Snoke reveals that he is Anakin Skywalker, who survived his injuries in a coma, sustained only by the malice of the dark side.  He then reveals that he is Rey's father and that he sired her specifically to create the ultimate force user who would transcend both the sith and the jedi.  At this point Luke appears and frees Finn, Poe and Chewbacca (C-3P0 got blown up in a humorous fashion earlier).  Snoke kills Luke and in a rage Rey attacks him, slicing off his hand, but Snoke escapes by jumping down an exhaust chute.  In the confusion Boba Fett manages to capture Finn and reveals that she plans to sell him to a notorious gangster rather than turning him over to the first order.
    • Our heroes attempt to catch Snoke, but he eludes them.  At the finale of the film Kylo Ren suddenly appears and tells Rey that after killing his mother he realized how misled he was led by Snoke's teachings and offers to train Rey, since he assures her that she is no match for Snoke at her current level.

    Spoiler

Hook, line, and sinker. I was so excited when I got done watching the movie to come over and check this post to find this. I was had handily.

    Hot damn.

  11. I feel like I should hate it, and placing Tracer on the same level of "classic reference" as the Iron Giant, etc., does a good job of turning me off to it...

but they have the Delorean, man. I love that car. I want to see that car in action so badly that I don't care about the rest.

Holy shit Firefox 57 is so bad.

I haven't had a gag reflex this bad since the Australis rollout years ago.

I thought to myself "Ah I should probably update my browser since it's acting a little jank" and no sooner had I seen the new UI than I'd downgraded back to my old version.

Not only did it destroy a bunch of addons I use, but the Classic theme restorer is not only busted, but Mozilla straight up removed the APIs required to support it ( and said they won't be adding them either)

Time to find a new browser I guess.

Firefox has been on the way out for me since they decided it was a great idea to change the built-in search menu from "drop down list of search engines" to "type in what you want, then click which search engine."

57 isn't doing them favors, especially with locking the tabs on top (I mean, there's a workaround, but it's a workaround for a feature that shouldn't have an alternative.)

EDIT: Oh man, 57 killed Chatzilla too? Maybe I will just roll it back after all. I was going to just get used to it, but that's a major loss for me.

  13. So Patreon is messing with fees.

Best I can determine, this kind of screws over the symbolic donor ($1 pledges, etc.), while also screwing over the content creator. However, as a business, I totally see where Patreon's coming from, especially since the flat transaction fees most financial institutions charge for card services fell to Patreon (assuming they do in the online marketplace, that is). Those $1 pledges don't particularly help the content creator (who used to see $0.80 from that dollar, and will now see $0.95), and hurt Patreon's bottom line, since AFAIK the transaction charge is a flat $0.35. Since Patreon only took $0.20 from the old way, that's $0.15 they have to pick up on those $1 symbolic pledges - which are apparently numerous based on the outcry.

In bigger chain businesses like Walmart or the grocier, the company's willing to eat the financial institute's fee because most people are buying ~$30 of stuff, or they offer their own in-house credit card where the fee is waived for transactions at the establishment. Smaller establishments (and more frequently gas stations/convenience stores) already pass that fee to the buyer, noting that "A fee of ___ will be added to credit/debit transactions." This seems like that, only people are up in arms because it didn't used to be like that. Does it screw over the pledger? Not if you're pledging actual money, but definitely if you're pledging the $1, since the total monthly is gonna jump 38%. Does it screw over the content creator? Arguably, yes, because while they get more per $1 pledge, there will be a lot less $1 pledges - and $1 is still $1, even if it's low.

Something to watch out for if you're using Patreon on either side, at least.
