If you don't think that Karkat is the best character, you're reading Homestuck incorrectly.

I just got the crew teleporter for the first time, and decided to test it on the first thing I came across, which happened to be an automated rebel scout.I (and the guy I teleported) found out the hard way that rebel scouts have no oxygen supply

The bit after you unlock Karkat's door wasn't in the beta so that was a nice surprise. According to Aranea:"The Heir of Doom was once a powerful psionic.
