  1. So what systems have people been playing/reading lately? I've been slightly obsessed with both Shadow of the Demon Lord and Mothership lately, they're both absolutely fantastic RPGs.  SotDL is this super grimdark fantasy game that has by far the best character creation system I have ever seen, and Mothership is a sci-fi horror game.  I highly recommend both.

  2. Not gonna lie, this new Oathbreaker format (or I guess not old, it's just finally gaining traction because of WAR) looks super interesting.

-60 card decks, 20 life.  Can't have more than one copy of any non-basic land, color identity rules apply just like in EDH.

-You have an Oathbreaker (any planeswalker) and a Signature Spell (any instant or sorcery in your color identity).  You can only play your signature spell when your Oathbreaker is on the field and then it goes back to the command zone, even if it would normally go somewhere else.

-Vintage Legal cards only, with a few exceptions.

    -Sol Ring is banned.

There's some super cool deck ideas floating around, and the power level seems to be the same of EDH-basically, whatever your playgroup agrees the power level is, that's what it's at.  You can do some super degenerate things-new Narset and Day's Undoing is ridiculous.  But it seems like a quick, fun format.  Hopefully it doesn't go the same way as Tiny Leaders/Frontier.

  3. So with the imminent release of Pathfinder 2.0, a lot of companies are releasing their "last hurrahs" for PF1.  Most notable is Drop Dead Studios, the guys who did Spheres of Power.  Rynjin, you're a fan of the system, right? They're basically combining all of their SoP books into one enormous, definitive volume of Spheres of Power, with all the errata.  It's a bit expensive, but if you're into third-party PF stuff, this system is the best of the best.  They just hit their funding goal on Kickstarter a few hours ago.

  4. So even though I post about it a lot, I haven't actually played Magic in like...a year.  A few of my friends and I got together today, so I brought some decks to test out.  And wow.  I made some good-ass decks.  I won a game with Slimefoot, even though I had been manascrewed the whole game and only had 4 mana to use.  Deathspore Thallid was just stupidly good, absolutely the MVP of that deck next to Slimey himself.  A friend of mine did really well with my Gishath dinosaur deck, which was nice to see.  And then in the next game, my friend sat down with my Varina zombies deck.  And good god.

I've been working on this deck for about 4 years now-I had started assembling the cards for a zombie deck back during like Khans of Tarkir, when Sidisi, Brood Tyrant came out.  And then last year, when Varina came out, I swapped over to her.  Which turns out to have been the right move because she is like...ridiculously consistent.  My friend won on turn 5 or 6 with Approach of the Second Sun.  It was like halfway down his deck but he managed to dig that deep in the space of just a couple of turns.  It was super impressive.  Also kind of nice to see a deck that I'd spent a ton of time and money on do so well.  Kinda wish I'd been piloting it, but hey-it's my deck so I'm counting it as a win for me.

  5. It is absolutely insane how much good stuff Orzhov has gotten the past few days.  I'm going to have to make at least 3 or 4 cuts to my Ayli deck to fit everyone in.  Also I might have to change my Ayli deck into a new-Teysa deck.

So nuRakdos doesn't work with Chance Encounter

    booo

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

On the plus side, imp tribal!

All jokes aside I'm still mad hyped for both Rakdos legendaries from this set. Rakdos and Judith are both super interesting, might make decks for both of them.

Is it though? It seems rather uninteresting to me, even if its obviously strong. It really is a mechanic that makes or breaks on its support: I first need to see what orzhov gets to do with all these 1/1s.

I agree, I do want to see more support cards.  But still, saccing things to get value is pretty much my favorite way of playing the game, so any mechanic that actively rewards that is pretty fine by my standards.

They appear to continue the trend of making the RtRtR mechanics either really bland or rehashes of old ones. To be fair however newflashback and newscrey are very fun and newbloodlust and newmonstrous have potential

I gotta say though, making Doomed Traveller its own mechanic and then tying it to Orzhov was a stroke of genius.

I never thought I'd say it but I like an azorius legend

Second time ever for me, first time was Ephara, back during Theros block.  But I liked most of the gods besides Pharika so she doesn't count much.

Like Magic art is any good these days.

Get back to me when the Foglios illustrate new cards.

Uhh...Seb McKinnon? Noah Bradley?  Just because Terese Nielsen doesn't do art anymore, it doesn't mean magic has shitty art now.

lol @ Lord of Extinction and Lavaclaw Reaches

That price point and there's already chaff being displayed on their super secret snek rare

The box art is also looking like it's going to be DIg Through Time. Man, I'm so happy for that reprint, it was getting really expensive at $1.50...I can't wait to open one of those as my rare. I mean, Lord of Extinction is technically passable for a mythic-it's about $12 right now, although that's definitely going to crash hard. At least it isn't Tree of Redemption.

Also inb4 Tree of Redemption (or Perdition, I could honestly see them doing either).

  12. Another day, another Masters set that nobody asked for. This time, with a MSRP of US $13.99 per pack! And if you buy a box (MSRP of US $335ish, although it'll 100% be higher) you get a single super rare masterpiece! How amazing!

Honestly though, fuck this set. Modern Masters 1 was honestly amazing, and it's just gone downhill ever since. I thought that MM17 was a step in the right direction, but obviously not.

  13. So with Guttersnipe and Goblin Electromancer being reprinted, and with the reprint of Wee Dragonauts to take the place of Nivix Cyclops, I can now remake my first ever standard deck-U/R Spellslingers.  It's an awful, awful deck, that's also capable of straight up one-shotting someone.
