I read this book recently, and it was pretty hard to put down. I thought it was a pretty well written story, besides a lot of confusion about "Tom's home," the forced romance towards the end, and the unrealistic dialogue of the children characters. The time skipping can also make it hard to follow, but once you get used to it the story gets better.
