  1. Because I can. Specifically, because I was given $1.500 - $2,000 in lab funds that I have to spend. I'm Computer Science so literally the only thing I need to buy is a fancy computer. I was hoping you guys might know some great picks.

    Limitations:

    - It's not me buying it, a lab assistant or secretary will order it. So it has to be a pre-built.

    - It has to be a Dell or a Mac, since those two are the only ones giving the university grants. I picked Dell.

    - It needs to be a powerhouse. We'll be using it for shit like numerical optimization. Stuff like running thousands of computations per second to determine the next prime number. Intense stuff like that.

    Thanks for your help, guys.

    Friend: Time to start playing dota? Is it free to download?

    Me: yeah, it's free

    Friend: Oh sweet

    Me: uhh, i should warn you though, most people consider it super hard, and that's coming from hardcore gamers

    Friend: Yeah haha my coworker mentioned that. He told me he would be happy to help me navigate my way through it

    Me: it'l... be a journey, to say the least.

  3. A friend of mine just got Steam, but they've actually never played a (non-mobile) video game in thier 21 years of being alive.

    Any suggestions for babby's first game? Free games would be best to whet thier taste of course,  but cheap ones will do too. I have two copies of l4d2 from when it was $4, and that's looking like a great candidate if I keep the difficulty on easy. Hearthstone is up there as well.

  4. I'm worried that the hype train will crap on it. People already hate We Happy Few because most people hyped the trailer and not the game itself. People hate This is the Police because they're looking for deep 1980's American social issues, when the game never once purported to be some mystical eye-opening documentary.

    I just want it to be awesome ;_;
