I cant really put into words why I like it that much, but its a classic JRPG, finest for the PS2 era for me. Lots of places to go, a good, if a bit cliche, story, well written characters and interactions between them, sweet old school battle system, each character has 5 skills to learn, so it gives you some variation. And of course, Toriyama's art style. And this happens. If you want to play a Dragon Quest, I'd recommend this one and the Dragon Quest 5 remake on the DS. While Dragon Quest 9 is also good, its a bit short and most of the game is based on reaching level 100 with all classes and doing the post game infinite dungeons. I'd say 9 is pretty much Final Fantasy 5. If you are bored with all the flashy real time RPGs, Dragon Quest is always a good back to roots.
