  1. New Mario Party looks nice.

I was wondering when they were going to release a new one/dlc since the switch lite can't even play Super Mario Party.

Or that could just be nostalgia glasses talking, because MP1/2/3 were my thing back in the day.

  2. I feel like Spy as a concept worked better before hats.

Because if you had like three soldiers on your team, they all looked identical, so a 4th Spy soldier wouldn't stick out too much.

Like, when everyone looks the same it's easier to blend in, so there was an element of "Oh they're stacking engies, it'll be easy to blend in as an engie"

But in modern TF2 disguises aren't effective like that because everyone is rocking Hats so you instantly say "Oh, it's Festive Engie #2, that's a spy"

Of course, spychecking was a hardcounter and Pyros were a brick wall, but it was a different dynamic overall y'know?

It's a lot harder to tell who's a spy when you've got three or four people who look identical instead of two.

  3. For Stuff I played this year,

Uh, Probably Bug Fables, Deep Rock, and Dusk.

Bug Fables is the Paper Mario Sequel I always wanted. It's charming, challenging, and consistently a joy to see the characters interact.

Remixes the combat formula in ways that make sense and I would be excited to see another layer added on in a sequel or something.

Finished the game with the option Hard Mode badge on and it gets pretty challenging, many of boss becomes a mini puzzle since you can't out dps them.

They added some post launch content and I'm really hoping they continue on with another game.

Everyone knows about DUSK, but I only played it this year and it's super good. Peak Quality Quake/Doom style running and shooting.

Honorable Mention to Project Warlock, which is cool, but a little jank, and a little unfocused at times. A fun time, but like B game polish/design.

Deep Rock Galactic isn't 'new' because it's been in early access for two years, but I got it when it released 1.0 this year.

Really fun to chill, mine, and explore caves with people, and then fight off a few waves of bugs.

I always liked exploring randomly generated cave systems in like, terraria and minecraft, so this takes that and focuses a game around it.

The new roughnecking missions are really good and I'm hoping that it gets a lot of post launch content.

Got to the end of the post before remembering that I Busted through Doom Eternal too.

I really enjoy Doom Eternal, even played the DLC and it's great, but it's so fast paced that it kind of becomes a blur though.

I also played Henry Stickmin this year, partially because I remember it coming up here at some point.

Despite never playing the originals back in the day, the remasters whisked me back in time to the golden age of flash animation and captivated me throughout every route and episode.

I was grinning the whole way through in a way that few games do these days. The character profiles and other gags had me trying to find everything.

  4. I've heard the new Hitman games called 'Hitman 2016' or "World of assassination"
You could technically say that it's Hitman: Codename 47, Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, but a lot of people skip straight to blood money and contracts.

So when people Say Hitman or Hitman 2, they're probably talking the new ones. Not Codename 47 where you shoot tigers in the jungle or Silent Assassin where power walking breaks disguise.

I kind of like the recent trend of game reboots/remasters even if they have confusing names.

There's a lot of 360/PS2 stuff that was great but trapped on old hardware.

    Warning: Long Dumb Rambling ahead

    Spoiler

Destroy all Humans getting a remaster was a welcome surprise.

    Red Faction Guerilla got remastered.

The Resident Evil remakes have been mostly great.

The Crash remakes spawned a whole new game.

Tony Hawk 1+2 is everything I ever wanted out of a new Tony Hawk game.

Going into next gen, I hope that some more 3D action games get a second chance.

A Mercenaries reboot with terrain deformation would be rad.

A Time Splitters collection with online multiplayer/map maker would be rad.

I'm all for new IPs too, like apparently Control is a spiritual successor to PsyOps: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

I know it's a lazy way to develop new games, and it's banking on nostalgia, but I like that some of these franchises are getting rereleased.

At the very least they're getting decent PC ports so they won't be trapped on consoles or emulators.

I don't know, I feel like indie development is stronger than ever because they can pretty much do whatever they want now.

There's a lot of amazing triple A games, but I feel like they're just perfecting stuff that already works?
A lot of the games that got remasters are stuff that tried something weird and different, or were top of their class in a genre that doesn't get made any more.

It's not *all* rose Tinted, like apparently the Medievil PS4 remake kind of sucked, because the game just doesn't hold up.

And there have been a bunch of lazy ports of 360 games that are just "we changed the graphics preset to Very High".

Also, as the new console Generation starts to happen, one of the first Launch Titles is a remake of Demon's Souls.

Ignoring the complaining about the changes, the PS5 is launching with a PS3 game as their headliner, that's crazy.

Triple A games are still Rad, but I feel like there's a lost middle ground between "We've spent infinity money on making this game beautiful and awesome" and "Hey, we threw together a professional game on a decent budget with some cool unrefined ideas" and "I made this indie game with a team of 10 people".

There's stinkers in all categories to be sure, but it feels like everything is either a Super focus tested quadruple A live service or a weird charming indie game.

Dad of Boi is a great game, but it's got these silly RPG elements shoehorned in because focus testing I guess???

Like, I love DMC5, but why is there a daily login reward for my single player action game???

Celeste and Hollowknight are like Quadruple A indie games but they still feel indie and they're not marketed as full retail games.

I feel like the industry is so afraid of taking risks, that they're going back to the games that *already* took those risks and either remaking them or making a spiritual sequel.

Like that new Star Wars Squadrons is apparently a GAASed up Rogue Squadron.

So I guess all this to say that I'm glad old, mostly cool, games are getting remade because they were designed (for better or worse) without modern day trends, marketing, or GAAS.

And if they do well enough, they might inspire studios to revitalize that franchise.

  5. Once a lurker, always a lurker.

I never posted much on oldspuf, but I read just about everything.

Enjoyed participating in the spuf server when it was around, had superfast ethernet at the time so micspam was fun.

Never really made a name for myself or anything, I think the biggest thing I contributed was the sfm video in Medic's conga thread.

I forget the events that linked me here, but I appreciate this cozy little corner of the internet.

  6. Went and saw Undertale Live this weekend. Really fun show, a bit disorganized, but it all worked out in the end.

Hearing "Your best friend" live was emotional.

It was a small venue, but it was super packed. Couple of people in Sans hoodies, but nothing crazy.

A bit disappointed they didn't do a rendition of Dogsong, otherwise the show was aces.

Going to see Nier Automata on the 25th too.

  7. I dunno, I just got Sword about a week ago and I'm having fun with it.

The two expansions averaged to 15 apiece just sounds like fallout dlc.

Annoying you can't get them individually though.

Two new areas that are gigantic wilds areas sounds really cool, because as soon as I hit the first wilds area I was like "what if they made a whole game like this" and the expansions should answer that question.

As for using DLC to sell cut content, I think this is at least a better solution than selling Pokemon Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield.

I'm like, turbo casual though, so I'm just here to catch the new mons and legendaries and stuff.

I still think it's stupid that a bunch of cool side activities from old games never came back.

Like the hollywood puzzle battles in Black/White 2.

After thinking about all those classic rock songs that have been used in countless awful movie trailers, I've began to wonder if there's a quantifiable number of times that a song can be used in an advertisement before it stops being respected. Or maybe not respected, but associated with ads moreso than associated with just being a song? I'm sure someone else knows what I mean here.

Flashbacks to "Just what I needed" and truck commercials.

  9. Having played Farpoint, I will say that VR Headcrabs will continue to be the stuff of nightmares.

Looks quality, but I'm not seeing anything particularly groundbreaking.

Still, looks like it's taking everything that "worked" in other VR titles, and adding a ton of polish and money into it.

I'm sure it'll be good and fun, but I'd be really impressed if it ends up being a full length game.
