Clearly the best way to rectify this is to have our heroes be entities of pure data, housed in the A.I. of the ship, and given physical humanoid forms through hard-light technology. This will of course allow them to alter their appearance, gender, and physiology at will, and could lead to storylines that raise interesting questions about identity and human nature.
