Both, basically. The story is essentially told through the characters.

As far as engine, I think I may simply stick with GM, since I already have a license. I may cut a few corners and use a pre-made engine in GM, though. I certainly could use a writer, maybe a graphics artist as well. As far as game play, we seem rather set on the RPG theme, I'll try to brainstorm some combat options, but I'm leaning a bit more toward a real time system.

No, that shouldn't be necessary. As far as telling if its overheating, try running this for a bit, and see what it spikes at. (For reference, at idle, my CPU is at 22C) If that doesn't seem to be the culprit, my next guess would be the PSU.
