Finished The Martian a bit ago. I highly recommend it. Good amount of science, with some great humor, and an interesting story.

Yeah, I got a pebble time steel, so I'm feeling like I can get a bit more colorful with my current pebble. I require entirely biased opinions on the following images: A: B: C: D: E: F:

I was leaning towards b and e anyway. I also asked if they had a circuit board pattern. No dice.

Conventional currencies can be easily adapted to be digital. I don't really see the difference in your example. You, for all intents and purposes, own that money in your bank account. Barring a complete and utter financial collapse, in which case the main source of wealth would be food, water, and ammunition. Theft wise, what's the difference if somebody steals your credit card and buys shit before you notice, than if somebody steals your phone, and buys shit before you notice? If they launder it properly it's gone anyway. Most addresses used for crime would probably be temporary anyway. I'd really like to see that happen honestly. Like I said, I like bitcoin for what it represents. At the end of the day, you still buy and sell it in dollar amounts, and have to convert it each way. If i could skip that step, it'd be great. As far as security, it's a 2 factor identification thing- "the best security is something you have and something you know." With a credit card, you can have just the "thing you know," being the card information. A card number, SID and expiration date is all you need. Bitcoin has both parts. You have your address, but you cannot spend the money unless you actively send it. So sure, if someone takes your phone, it's the same as them stealing a card. But them stealing your address is not the same as stealing credit card info. Most fraud is not done physically anymore anyway- phishing, fake websites, etc all send your info to some person across the world- far from cellphone difference. -

That's well and good and I can understand why, but curiosity doesn't fuel currencies. I'm not really arguing it's viability, nor do I have anywhere near the knowledge to start to do so. But the idea of a completely digital currency, merely as a convenience, really intrigues me. We're very clearly moving towards a more digital society, and you can't exactly feed dollar bills into a card slot. The reason I like them over, say, credit cards is that it's entirely centralized. When you use a credit card online, you send a request to send funds from your bank. You don't physically hold that money. If someone gets your credit card number, they can spend your money. That's because the card is more of an identifier, than actual money. They request money as "you," so it goes through without having physical access, and without anyone explicitly noticing. With, say a wallet on your cell phone, you send the money directly, as if you were handing cash to another person. There's no middle man, and you draw directly from your own supply that you hold directly. Your "address" is only used as an identity and to receive money, not send it. So unless they physically have your device, say a phone, they cannot spend your money. Even then, all transactions are public, so you can know what addresses your money is going to. (Not necessarily the people or locations mind you.) The way I see it is as "cash" that you can interact with digitally. Not referencing Bitcoin specifically, but just cryptocurrency in general. -

I'm honestly curious; why? You even said you bought some when the price tanked. Currencies shouldn't tank. Curiosity more than anything. The actual technology behind it is kinda interesting. I didn't get it as any sort of investment, just wanted to see how it worked. -

I've dabbled with bitcoin (I bought about $50 when the price tanked.) I like it as a method for paying for digital goods. I've bought two humble bundles with it, and I actually feel better about it than using a credit card in most places. The whole "magic internet money" is really off putting, and it can have that kind of culture in some places, but I can see it having legitimate use in a good amount of time. -

I'm kinda excited because we're finally getting to the "FUTURE!" era of gaming. VR, AR, and Motion controls are something that have been gimmicky and niche for a very long time. But with the push from both console and PC, and the fact that it's almost at a consumer level, it's this close to becoming a normal thing. And that's REALLY FREAKING COOL. However, I do think it is unsuited for a lot of environments. It is very immersive, which can be a bad thing on occasion. Sometimes I want to play some KSP and work on homework. VR isn't going to work for that. It's not very social- you cant play on a couch with some friends with VR headsets on. Third person and casual games also will not transition well.

Pretty much. When we made the switch to IPB, ian stepped away, I guess to focus on moderating SPUD/SPUF. -
