[spoiler2]Ian confirmed for best[/spoiler2]

New Wot I think: Initial Thoughts*: GNU/Linux, Mint. So, I decided it was time for a change of scenery. My windows installation was getting cluttered, things were slowing down, and I just had too many programs that I hadn't used more than once. What should I do? Take time and run a virus scanner, clean out things I don't need? NOPE. I wiped the slate clean, and installed the Linux Mint Distro.** I chose this over Ubuntu mostly because I had very poor performance with Ubuntu last time, and Mint comes with a lot of proprietary software installed (drivers, ect.). It certainly takes a bit of work anyway to get it to 100%, but not unmanageable. Mostly it was getting the Nvidia drivers installed, but it was nothing a quick google couldn't solve. Steam installation was without a hitch. The only thing is that the notifications do not show above the task bar (they are hidden behind it). Other than that, I have been able to play TF2, FTL, Minecraft, and KSP. All ran excellently natively. I'm also starting to experiment with Wine, which seems to be working well. Currently downloading Dota 2, we'll see if I can get it to work. As far was the desktop itself goes, I cannot believe I'm staying this, but it is actually better than Windows 7 to me. Everything is laid out well, easy to find, and the search function actually works without taking 20 seconds to find anything. Lots of themes to choose from, multiple monitor support is good, everything appears to be adequate. So far I have not found a single thing to make me want to re-install my windows partition. One of my favorite things about this so far is how easy it is to fix and maintain. Everything is accessible through the console, and you can make a lot of changes to the system easily. tl;dr Everything is going beyond better than expected. I doubted the possibility of Linux to be used as a person's dedicated OS, but I am finding it a much more viable option than I thought. *These are, obviously my initial thoughts, and should be taken with as much or less credit than usual. I will try to follow these up with a proper review once I have spent sufficient time. **Pardon the terminology, I'm new to this.

Oh yeah I installed that too. Also, finally got TF2 to run. It runs the same, if not faster than the windows version.

Ubuntu, more specifically. I recently (last night) finally got into the Steam Linux beta thing, so I'm installing Ubuntu on my spare laptop. Will report findings. Day 1: Installation. Just going to use the windows installer, seeing as I can never seem to find spare disks or flash drives. Posting thread, then installing.

Night 1 progress: Nvidia Drivers installed, Chromium installed, system updates installed. Everything appears to be working well. Got Wine, but not sure how to use it yet. Games ready: Minecraft, FTL, TF2 is downloading, and KSP is being worked on.

So uh, I guess I lost the driver disk for my mobo, and win won't get online to get the drivers. As an experiment, I will attempt to use only Mint for a week or two. Tonight my goal is to get drivers and steam installed, and maybe look at getting wine to work. I will be devoting 90% of my efforts to getting Dota to work.

That actually isn't something I thought could be done before, so it was actually pretty cool. Whether or not it needed a 5 minute video...
