Not in the Pokemon Ranger games, you don't. Well, you still have to control them with some kind of special device, but still. And anyway, they don't obey the trainer completely after being captured; they need to be trained to obey the trainer, hence the term 'trainer'. Not that that's relevant to my original post.

Well, from a strictly in-universe perspective, there do exist many alternative occupations to Pokemon trainer. A lot of them require working with Pokemon, sure, but they do that without being in those Poke Balls. So you (or, rather, the character that you're playing as) aren't required to hunt Pokemon. Everything else you said is correct, however.

Speaking of which, vegetarians who say they don't eat meat because they don't wish to eat 'living things' are technically wrong because plants are living things as well. The only way to have a completely 100% harmless diet is to eat stuff with no DNA in it, which means they'd be restricted to eating chemically-made foods (or bits of scrap metal, like that French bloke who's name I can't remember). But of course, any proper vegetarian or vegan doesn't eat living things in practice, so this information changes absolutely nothing.
