So I’ve decided to do a running commentary for Rebuild of Sailor Moon Kai Crystal. I'm pretending I'm entirely new to the series. (I have passing knowledge but never actually watched the original) ep 1 I’m not even going to dignify that one. So she’s 14 and in eigth grade, and she just tripped over a cat. Oh hey the cat from the opening. And it dislikes her. Also it has bandaids on its head and Usagi removes them to reveal a crescent-shaped mark. I’m sure that’s not going to be relevant. Usagi runs off to school and SCENE SWITCH Shadowed lair, guy invoking “Great Evil that serves the Master,” telling it to seek the “Silver Crystal.” Okay then. Anyway, back at the more important stuff, Usagi is standing in the hallway for being late and reminisces about the princess from the intro. A dream, then. And needs to learn not to talk in the hallway because the teacher (Haruna Sakurada) lambasts her for getting a 30 on a test. Meet Naru (friend who wasn’t in the OP and is therefore probably irrelevant after episode one or two) and Umino (A friend in the sense that he talks to Usagi, on the other hand he's the kind of nerd that nerds punch). Another namedrop of Sailor V (Okay, how does Usagi not know about her?) And at this point I have to ask what the hell the subbers were doing because they just translated “kimochi” as "I know, right”. Apparently V stopped a robbery at a jewelry store and the girls Usagi’s chatting with move on to how awesome jewelry is. And Naru’s family runs a jewelry store. Which is having a sale. OSA-P So Usagi and two unnamed girls enter the store- and apparently Naru’s mother is giving a 95% discount. What. Ah, so she’s (possibly possessed by) the demon from earlier. Not sure how jewelry sales relate, but whatever. Usagi leaves and tosses her test paper behind her … and it hits that dude from the OP. He trolls her about the test grade and is wearing a tux in public… and they apparently recognize each other. Huh. Also he nicknames her “Odango Atama” Usagi’s already in love, but thunders about the tux thing. Tux Guy name drops the crystal. Hmmm. Oh, I’m gonna quote that one a lot. So she indulges this fantasy by playing a Sailor V game at the arcade (What) and is friends (with a crush) with arcade-owner Motoki. If she goes to this place regularly, how does she not know about Sailor V? There are literally rows of this one game. Cat from earlier shows up and staaaaaaaaares at Usagi. Fadeout to her getting home, and Umino apparently told her mother about his 95 test grade (I'm hoping he gets braindrained or something by these demons) which makes Usagi’s 30 bad enough for her to get told to leave the house (um) just as her little brother Shingo shows up and mocks her grades. Usagi aims a “Sailor V Kick” at him… and hits the door and hurts her foot. She’s got a ways to go Tux Guy patrolling or something as the demon/Naru’s mother mentions that the jewelry is draining energy from the people who wear it. Which is the perfect time for Naru to walk in and realize that her mother is now a horrible fanged person with an evil grin. EYECATCHES- nothing special Usagi’s been allowed back in the house and immediately gets to procrastinating. And by that I mean having another prophetic dream, except this time she’s… in the Sailor V game... okay what? One very odd dream later, and she’s been woken up by the cat and OH GOD IT TALKS IT’S AN INCUBATOR KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT DON’T LISTEN TO ITS WORDS OF TEMPTATION USAGI KILL IT Cat’s named Luna, and apparently those band-aids somehow blocked its telepathy/talking. Usagi goes into denial… only to be swayed by a fancy brooch thing. Eesh. Luna asks her to “find your allies and defeat the villains, then find our Princess.” Simple enough. Usagi really only realizes her new brooch is glowing, until Luna convinces her to say Moon Prism Power Make Up. *braces for sequence* Wait, why does it paint her fingernails if she then gets gloves? Well, whatever the case the EGREGIOUSLY CG TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCE wasn't too bad. Amusingly, Usagi is bewildered… and I can’t even describe this one without a screencap. The hair gems tip her off her to Naru being in trouble. Demon mentions Naru’s mother is asleep and then transforms into an actual demon as Usagi makes her entrance. Also, Tux Guy skulks in a corner. Heh. Luna gives her the hint by meowing at the crescent moon. Okay, points for the speech. Demon can apparently use the jewelry to turn her victims into zombies who attack Usagi. And she immediately trips and skins her knee before running in circles with no clue of what to do. All points removed. …Wait, what just happened? Usagi just screamed at the top of her lungs and shattered half the windows in the place as well as stunning all the zombies and the demon. Tux Guy yells at her to get her shit together and Luna tells her to call out the attack. “Moon Tiara Boomerang!” And it one-shots the demon and turns it to dust. Tux Guy hops out the window on the second floor while looking quite dapper doing so and namedropping the Silver Crystal once more. I’m assuming there’s magic in the disguise because if not you’re both idiots. Admittedly, both could be true. The ominous dude from earlier has a pointless cameo. The next day, Naru is having way too much fun talking about her traumatic attack by a “robber” (is her mother okay?) and Usagi eavesdrops and forces herself to accept that it wasn’t a dream before we close on the blue-haired girl from the OP. The ED is quite saccharine and romantic. Not my cup of tea, but it’s not bad. One down, quite a few to go.
