While I do not know the exact numbers, organised crime numbers will be much closer to 5% than to 20% or even 30%. And losing 95% of armed criminals seems worth making 5% a bit more dangerous. Plus, policemen will of course still be allowed to carry weapons

Criminals are citizens just as well. The ones that do have the connections to get illegal weaponry are involved in organised crime, which is maybe 5%* of criminals. Ergo, 95%* of potential shooters lose their weaponry. *I am pulling these number out of my ass of course, but I hope you get the point

When they're illegal, criminals could still get them from the black market, sure, but it becomes much, much harder I think we had this discussion before.. I guess it's in the big boys' lounge now

That is a good point. If someone breaks into your house and you have the oppurtunity to escape through the window you should obviously be allowed to stay and defend your property. Then again the definition of assailant if very iffy. See this exact case: the whole debate is about whether Zimmerman attacked or got attacked. Who is right in a conflict is up to the Judicial system, they shouldn't motivate people to do harm. that varies per state, of course. And while I would rather have a State/Country permit no fireweapons at all (unless under extreme strict regulations), ten bullets seems like a very reasonable line.

And there we disagree. While self-defense is of course needed, it should always be the top priority of the judicial system to keep damage in a conflict to a minimum.
