The isue with most memes is that they are just incredibly overused. Remember that most of them originate from 4chan, so by the time they are sick of it the rest of the internet is barely catching on. Add in to the fact that this has several phases (from 4chan to reddit, from reddit to 9gag, from 9gag to youtube, from youtube to facebook) and at the end of it the internet feels like you you showed your dad Portal and now he keeps on saying "the cake was a mistake" every time you have dinner, several years after you played it.On top of that there are also a lot of memes that just weren't funny to begin with: Trollface for example pretty much says "I consider myself about 20 times as witty and clever as I actually am"
