CHAPTER 18 ABOVE WAS NOT RELEASED BACK WHEN IT WAS MEANT TO BE. READ IT FIRST. Writing may be a bit weird - the emperor's my writing groove is off. Chapter 19 [spoiler2]Cube’s House The oven beeped. “Cookies are done.” “Mmm.” Neither Octavius nor Cavera made any move to get them. After a few moments of silence, Octavius sighed. “One second.” Cube gently slipped out of Cavera’s arms. Just as Cube was setting down the tray, someone knocked. “I’ll get it.” “Gimme a second to fix my top.” With a click, the door swung open. Something stood in the door, a thing of darkness with hellfire eyes and a maw of blood-red light. In other words, Jay. “That... escalated quickly.” Octavius smoothly stepped in between a blushing Cavera and Jay. “Tell Byron the Raven is in play. Give him these.” Suddenly he was standing in within arm’s reach of Cube, holding out a letter with the words READ FIRST on it and a closed manila folder with something inside - maybe a book? “Hold on, what do you-” “No time, I have to go.” In the distance, Cube could hear sirens. His phone began to ring. “Seeya, maybe.” Before Octavius could say anything more, Jay was gone. He pulled his phone out of his pocket. “Hello?” “Cube? This is Rammite. Have you seen Dual?” “Yeah, he was just here.” Cube hesitated, then asked, “why?” “We think he may have been the one to attack Ms Summers at the banquet.” ************************** Byron’s Squad Car “How?” “How do we know?” Rammite usually didn’t make a habit of answering a question with another, but his thoughts were in other places. “I dropped by your office to drop something off. Didn’t see you, but I knew Jason is usually in late. I went up to his office, and the door was unlocked. I saw a set of three glass daggers on a shelf, and a glasses cloth and some spray.” “You know they were the same?” Byron, who had been silent so far, spoke up: “I mark all of the evidence I give you two with a special isotope. They were the same.” Octavius could sense the suspicion, the anger, the rage that simmered just below Aery’s calm exterior. He set a hand on the chief’s shoulder. “I didn’t know.” “I believe you,” Byron half-lied. “Now let’s find the bastard.” ************* “Finding the bastard” led them back to the police station, where Byron, Rammite, and Octavius huddled around a map of the city, the three glass daggers laying on the desk nearby. They’d sent some officers to gather the rest of Jay’s things - carefully, of course. Byron took a deep breath. “Ok, Cube. Let’s start with what you know about places he frequents. Where’s he live?” “I’ve got no idea. I was under the impression that he was kind of homeless.” Rammite raised an eyebrow, and asked: “How about places he frequents?” “I dunno. The nearby park, I guess. And some place in one of the warehousing districts.” Rammite seemed to sink into thought at this statement, so Byron pick up the questioning, and said, “Where, exactly?” “I don’t know. I barely know anything about him. He grew up in one of the now-abandoned districts. He’s orphaned, but does remember one or both of his parents. He used to get coffee at Maverick’s coffee shop. Beyond that, nothing.” Rammite looked up. “I met Carol at the park. The Surgeon’s home base was in a warehousing district.” Here, he briefly perused the map. “And it’s the closest one to your office.” “I chose that office years ago. Way before the first Surgeon attack.” “He might have been honing his skills on people nobody would notice for years.” Byron sighed, and said, “Let’s go over what we do know. We found the glass daggers in Jason’s office, in part of a matching set. He spoke to you and then vanished, and is not answering any attempts at communication. He’s evidently been hiding pretty much everything about himself.” Rammite looked up from the map. “Cube, does he usually keep his door locked?” “Most of the time.” “If he had something like those knives out, he would’ve locked it for sure,” Byron murmured, before briefly pausing. “It’s possible he was framed, but somehow I doubt it. Cube, do you know anyone who knew Dual well?” “No, I… wait. That girl, Carol, she dropped by and asked to speak to him. She kinda ran out, so I guess something must have scared her off.” Rammite looked half-intrigued, half-worried. “Let’s go.” [/spoiler2] Now go to your holmes.

Chapter 18 [spoiler2]Huff’s Mansion Wordless, dead-eyed, Huff sat in his armchair. Grim-faced, Byron stood next to him. “We’ll find the killer. I swear.” No response. Byron sighed, weary. The world would never let him rest. ************* The ghoul slipped through the window, a small stone totem in his hand. He approached Silent’s corpse, now surrounded by a white chalk line, and laid a hand on the massive wound on the bodyguard’s head. Forced soul reinsertion was dangerous, particularly on someone who had died so violently. Luckily, Jay had some experience. “Wha-” A police officer, wearing rubber gloves, was standing in the door. Lightning-fast, Jay flung a curse, paralyzing the man where he stood. A gurgling moan came from beneath him. He saw the terror in the officer’s eyes. No witnesses. A knife to the chest solved that issue. He grabbed Nici’s corpse from the bed - that one would be a bit more difficult to do, if he could at all - and leaped through the window, damaging Nici’s corpse a bit more. Shame, that. He sprinted away, hiding in the park across the street. Moments later, he saw Silent’s reanimated corpse crawl out the window, thudding onto the pavement below. The undead abomination loped away, with only one thought on its desiccated mind: revenge. ************************** Byron’s Office He groaned, head in his hands. A dead officer, and two bodies missing. Could his day get any worse? Oh, right. Things could always get worse. He had to interview Lesdin. Sighing wearily, he grabbed the ‘Gates, Lesdin’ file off of his desk. “Rammite,” the commissioner called, “time to interview our preacher.” ************* Lesdin’s laughter boomed through the interview room as the walked in. “You kept me waiting! So, who’s the good cop?” Well, there was one plan out the window. “No good cop, Lesdin. Just Satan and his right-hand-devil.” “You even confess to being evil!” He chuckled again. ************************** Slums of SPUF City Silent limped through the moonless night, searching for someone who would be able to help him. There. On instinct, he leaped out of the shadows he stalked in and grabbed a middle-aged SPUFer. “Ahab.” He didn’t know how he knew the name, but it was one of the few things he did now, so he might as well start there. The SPUFer’s eyes widened. “What the hell are you? Get offa me! I-” He stopped. “Hold on, I’ve seen you... just, less ruined.” His eyes narrowed, searching past the angry red mass of flesh that had grown over the cavernous wound on Silent’s head. “You’re Silent! You died!” “Ahab!” “You mean Guilty Ahab?” The SPUFer’s eyes narrowed. “Why’re you looking for him?” “Ahab!” “He’s been seen in the industrial district! I don’t know nothing else!” The dead knew things the living could not, and Silent knew the terrified SPUFer spoke the truth. The undead abomination loped off into the night. ************************** Unknown Location The massive man of darkness shifted, reality shifting and warping around him. Somewhere, a SubSPUFer had been snatched from death’s door. He willed himself to know who had been saved. Silent. For a brief moment, the constant fluctuation of reality around him intensified, then it calmed. He would deal with this. “Euacana.” The Surgeon was snatched away from his current ‘project’, and appeared in the shadowy leviathan's throne room. He dropped to his knees. “Master.” “The Crow is in play.” “For how long?” “I do not know yet. It is hidden from me.” Everything that was hidden from him, was hidden by him. In the future, his power would be so great he would decide what his past would know. The man of darkness waved a pitch-black hand. A Raven’s Tale materialized in front of the Surgeon. “Read.”[/spoiler2]
