    Muslim Shenanigans

I completely agree with you "on paper". It seems pretty ridiculous that people hold our entire country responsible for the actions of a few. At the same time, there are a lot of contributing factors here. For one, to these people, the United States not taking legal action against the filmmaker/s is just one more example of how our country is "anti-islam". People like to say "it's just a youtube clip, what's the big deal?" but you have to understand that in most of the places these people live in, even something simple like that could get you arrested, jailed, or worse. That kind of stuff is very stricly regulated. The entire concept of "freedom of speech" is simply not relatable because they don't have those kinds of rights. They assume that the US government themselves condone these anti-Islamic sentiments because in their country, the government only allows sentiments that they agree with to be expressed. So, the simple act of not supressing this video makes it look like the government actually supports it, in the eyes of many Muslims. On top of that you have extremist groups waiting in the wings to take advantage of situations like these to rile the people up. Like I said, it just further exacerbates the whole "Us vs. Them" mentality that a lot of these militant muslims have.

    Muslim Shenanigans

This is exactly what I came here to post. When you look at the way that just about every non-Islamic power has fucked over the Middle East time and time again, it's really no surprise that radical groups managed to lead people into this angry "Us vs. Them" mentality. These people feel like they have no power and are at the mercy of nations that are predominantly Christian or Jewish, so they retreat further into their Islamic identies and pull this holy war shit. So, to expand on what I was saying befoere, it's not just the fact that these people have a poor quality of life. It's the fact that these people have a poor quality of life that, in many ways, countries like the United States caused. These are people that are lashing out because they feel (and in many cases are) victimized.

    Muslim Shenanigans

I think it has a lot to do with the quality of life and the religion. Many countries that are occupied predominantly by Christians have a higher quality of living (to be fair, probably because they've gone out of their way to fuck over just about everyone else) while a lot of the countries where this kind of shit happens are not the nicest places to live. If Muslims were all fat and happy and Christians were trying to eke out a living alongside radical religious groups who would kill people, hold back progress and generally make life shitty for them, it might be the other way around. Either way, I think both of them have the potential to breed violent behavior.

    Muslim Shenanigans

I used to be the same way but my mind's changed a lot over the years. The way I see it is this: I tolerate people. I don't necessarily tolerate belief systems. The majority of believers are fine, decent people. That doesn't mean I attribute those characteristics to the religion they are a part of. I don't think your beliefs - especially the superstitious, supernatural elements of them which goes for all of them, even Buddhism - makes you a "better person". I'm not disagreeing with you there. My point, which I admittedly didn't make very clearly, was that I don't really like the whole "What would (insert religious figurehead here) do" quote to begin with. I don't think these people, in most cases, are ones that the average person can relate to because they're direct prophets from God or have some crazy super powers and the common person isn't/doesn't. It blows my mind, for instance, that people support religions on the idea that "we should have faith even though we can't see God" when the very people they look to in their holy texts as examples have God popping into their lives every five minutes just to keep them from fucking up. Moses didn't have faith. He had plagues and direct holy intervention that gave him evidence that there was a God (in the context of his story). How does that relate to modern day people who don't witness the same day to day miraculous occurrences.

Is there really that much of a difference?

    Muslim Shenanigans

Agreed. For instance, when confronted with homosexuals living a sinful lifestyle I often ask myself how Jesus would treat them in that situation. Then I realize I can't cure their gayness by touching them or turn blood into wine or some shit like that so I just call them faggots and tell them they can't get married or sometimes I kill them. Next best thing really.Yay Jesus!

    If Atheists ruled the world

Fair enough. I just don't like the attitude lots of people have that all spiders are harmful and need to be squashed on sight. You're one of the exceptions to the rule, but lots of people pull the "Black widows omg" card and in most cases they don't have a legitimate reason to be that paranoid about it.

    If Atheists ruled the world

Well, you do live in California. I hear they prefer warm climates so in your case I'll retract that argument. Still, that doesn't mean you have to kill every other kind of spider in your house.

    If Atheists ruled the world

Naming one of the more venomous species as the norm is like saying "I don't go outside because the streets are full of serial killer rapists". Maybe you'll bump into one serial killer rapist in your lifetime but by and large most people are harmless aren't going to bother you if you don't bother them. Like spiders.

Because every spider is a black widow.
