    RIP THQ

After saints row three absolutely ruined anything fun or interesting in that series I though it couldn't possibly get any worse but here comes the guys behind dead island to rip even more enjoyable bits out of it. At least Stick of Truth is going to Ubisoft and Sega might turn around the DoW franchise.

    Splosion's Story Time.

So... This year's Chattacon... Just got back and I have a few stories but don't feel like typing for an hour at the moment so i'll just leave you with this special little redneck moment I observed during the con. Saturday night my girlfriend and I were walking through the hotel bar just past the buffet and here was this whale of a woman at a table by the buffet. You know the kind of morbidly obese where someone's just a few pounds shy of needing a rascal to get around? Yeah, that's where this woman was at. She was stuffing her face full of all you can eat ribs and had a napkin stuffed in the collar of her shirt and it was slathered in barbecue sauce. Then I nothiced something odd... There were two tiny arms sticking out from under the napkin. This woman had her 8 month old child in a baby chest harness with a napkin draped over his head to protect him from the rain of pork fat and BBQ sauce... ...Gotta love rednecks... ...and this guy...

To The Moon. Game of the Year.

So... I made my girlfriend play through this while she was visiting. POKER FACE THROUGH THE WHOLE THING! Not one tear. I'm afraid I may be dating a sociopath. :tin:
  8. After recently playing through To The Moon and watching Indie Game: The Movie, I had this bizarre moment of inspiration for a game concept after seeing the amazing storytelling of to the moon and how personal Super Meat Boy was to Team Meat. I hope I can get across the idea for it well here because it is a bit abstract. The story: A man wakes up in his bed completely paralyzed and begins screaming for help until he finds all control of his body has been taken over by some unknown force (the player). As he's guided through the world his life goes from normal to a living hell after having this force make him steal cars, attack innocent people, perform life threatening activities, etc all the while having the avatar screaming for help regaining control of himself. Eventually he is found by a group of scientists who had survived being controlled by this force who kidnap him for testing to try to break the cycle of control. So the story would basically revolve around turning "the fourth wall" into a mirror and taking a look at the control we as gamers have over the avatars on our screen. I then thought more about the characters and started relating them to my childhood gaming experiences much like team meat did. I thought, "What childhood gaming icons could have escaped the control of their audience" and decided to have one of the scientists be based off of earthworm jim, which has long since moved on from the spotlight of today's gamers and afterwards decided that the player should be taking control of one still around today, super mario. The story would eventually end with the scientists "breaking the fourth wall" (literally) by discovering a way to communicate with the player and that's when I had a real moment of inspiration. Why not achieve that by having "the scientist" as a bot profile on steam actually add the players account and then message him begging him to stop? And here's where it gets depressing. As I thought over this idea more and more I thought back on how personal Meat Boy & Bandage Girl were to their developer. How they represented real people from his perspective and that's when I realized this entire concept was coming from a very big moment in my life. This isn't something easy for me to talk about but many years ago my life as I knew it was snatched out from under my feet. The scouting label that had signed my band passed us up for the Heart Attacks, My girlfriend of 5 years had left me, I could no longer afford my house, and I had to move away from everyone and everything I'd known. During this time I started doing whatever drugs I could get my hands on and one night I found my limit. The incident was so intense that I was literally a passenger in my own body. I barely recall everything that happened that night but I do recall moments of screaming inside my own mind for it to just stop. After I woke up in a holding cell and the event was over I had my wake up call and started taking the slow steps towards moving on with my life. After that realisation this went from being just a neat concept for a game and something very personal, and I know this is never going to get made. I'm so far from a game developer but it's been itching at me to share this somehow and this seems like the best way I could do it. I have a very long track record of good concepts long forgotten so I just wanted to get this written down somewhere but feel free to discuss.

So I had an idea for a game.

Thanks and no need for any sympathy here guys it's all long in the past. Well the thing is I didn't really imagine it as an "interactive movie" like To The Moon. If anything the idea I have is more like Retro City Rampage, as in a nostalgia mashup pointing out the effects on "the control" on the lives of classic gaming figures. Aside from the few nostalgia bits (platforming levels, gta style 2d sandbox sections, etc etc) I thought of the primary "overtone" of the game would be a classic japanese RPG/zelda styled theme. I also had the idea that the avatars movements would be awkward and clumsy as if he's trying to fight the control. So for instance instead of walking down a staircase he might fall down them, his walking would be robotic and unnatural etc. I also had the idea that the avatar would be increasingly paranoid he was developing a severe psychosis as the game progressed not only because of the unseen force guiding him but from things like items mysteriously dissapearing when he picked them up (going into his inventory) and mysteriously reappearing when he needed them. I also put a great deal of thought into the individual characters. "The plumber" (mario) Obviously still in the spotlight today and the idea of myself losing control to mushrooms doesn't really need much explanation as to why I relate that to mario. "The princess" (peach) Again another figure during this time although my "princess" was very different. I thought of turning the cliche of "the princess being in another castle" on it's ear here. My girlfriend at the time had been seeing another man which I didn't find out until the end of the relationship and felt like it could be incorporated easily with the plumber being forced into "saving the princess" only to realize that she wasn't captured but running away. "The Scientist" (earthworm jim/some other forgotten gaming icon) The voice of reason trying to break the control. During my incident this figure was present as well in the form of my friends trying to keep my wits about me. (although utterly failing)

  12. Yup, you DO NOT want to stay in micro gravity for any extended period of time. When you enter a lower gravity enviroment your body starts to lose bone density at an alarming rate. Guess where all that bone goes? Straight into your kidneys, which leads to monster sized kidney stones which then have to be passed without the aid of gravity. Not to mention that moon dust may as well be space anthrax. It's an extremely fine powder that can clog up machinery and is so erosive it can eat away that it can wear away kevlar. And god help if you inhale any. The dust is basically powdered crystal that causes scilicosis. On top of all this without an atmosphere the moon has ridiculous temperature fluctuations that could absolutely melt you in sunlight but freeze you solid in the shade.
  13. I SAW IT FIRST! MINE!!
  14. As much as I laughed at this it actually does make sense. Remember mars does have an atmosphere. It's a piece of crap atmosphere and offers very little protection from all the nastiness of space but it's still a very important part of the planet. Look at it this way. Say we create to colonies off the planet, one on mars and one on the moon. The moon colony could be wiped out in a split second because of a single meteor while the mars atmosphere is large enough to burn them up. Not to mention the benefits of absorbing/deflecting ambient radiation and protection against solar winds and electromagnetic storms. I'm very very excited to see this happening. I think we're looking at something great about to happen, not just with this but science has been moving forward at incredible paces lately. Discovery of the Higgs Boson particle, the new mars rover, huge advances in engineering allowing for all this. Snooki in space aside, it looks like our race is finally getting off our ass and getting off this planet. And speaking of asses, the first astronaut down there needs to stick his right in the camera of the new rover. It would be the single greatest moment in television ever.

    CES 2013

Not sure if anyone else is paying attention to CES coverage but here's a few of the gaming specific highlights. Xbox 360 makes new weird kinect crap Razer Edge gaming tablet hitting shelves Nvidia Shield: New handheld in developement with a focus on streaming PC games. The Shield & Edge look very promising. If they do everything they're promising I'll be very interested in these.
  16. I love how Tim Timsen spent months bashing SPUF while he was on SCUD, yet the second he gets the ban hammer there he becomes an active SPUF poster.

    Awesomenauts

I'd like Vinnie more if I wasn't so terrible with him. I wish that spike dive wouldn't clip through enemies. I can almost never hit anyone with a hirzontal attack. Well Clunk's also one of the slowest nauts in game and has pretty mediocre range/attack speed on top of that. In most cases Clunk's hard counter is just running away.
