    Magic The Gathering (TCG)

It apparently did have an officially supported fan-made simulator, but I can't find anything on it from the last year. I asked Jay about this and he said that he already told me all about it at some indeterminate point in the past. In retrospect, I don't know if I even talked to him about Force of Will at all before that conversation.

Wizards ran out of ideas so they just keep going back to the same places. But meanwhile, in Force of Will land:

I loved the higher difficulties on Metal Gear Rising.... except for Revengeance on Armstrong. Specifically the second part of the battle where it's a hopeless fight until Blade Wolf bails you out. I believe the cutscene to get past it is triggered either by Raiden getting hit after a relatively short timer, or by a much longer timer elapsing. However, on Revengeance Armstrong will one hit kill you with every single attack (in this section of the fight), so your only choice is to just run down the longer timer. And this amounts mainly to running away repeatedly and hoping that you don't accidentally back yourself into a corner that you can't get out of. It's pretty lame, and a shame for what is otherwise an amazing experience.

I'm guessing that it became more popular terminology due to two reasons: First, it initially looks like it is less of an insult than "asshole." Often it's used as though someone toxic is literally poisonous and as such shouldn't be allowed to interact with anyone ever, whereas you might tolerate an asshole, so really it isn't any less of an insult. But at first glance it doesn't sound as bad, so you can get away with using it in more contexts. The second reason is related to this, in that it's a lot more vague what "toxic" means when compared to asshole. Someone could theoretically be toxic while not being unpleasant or being a mean person, due to creating a bad environment inadvertently or something. An asshole has to be a bit more active. Thus you can use "toxic" in many situations where you wouldn't get away with "asshole." At this point it's just been used so much that many people use it as a default without thinking about it.

Japan redeems itself with most hated Gundam character poll (Katejina should be #2 though).
  8. I need some words which exist but which are obscure. Archaic real words, or words invented for little-known speculative fiction both would work just as well. Suggestions please.

It plays a lot like Magic crossed with Hearthstone, with cards laid out like Yu-Gi-Oh. So far our collective card pool is pretty limited, so our play options are limited, but it seems fun. One big difference from Magic that I like is that you can attack tapped creatures, making utility creatures easier to deal with. (However the opponent can still block such attacks, so it isn't a death sentence for them). You can't get land screwed, since your lands are in a different deck and are brought into play by tapping your leader card. Basically this means that you have a guaranteed land drop every turn unless you want to tap your leader for something else. There's a bit of commander flavor too in that your leader can turn into a beefy creature in the late game (though unlike commander if your leader dies it's dead for good, unless it has been given the imperishable ability). Five colors seem to be pretty close to Magic: White has been doing weenie, tapping, and life gain, blue card draw and bounce, black has creature destruction and reanimation, red does a lot of damage quickly, green has fatties and mana shenanigans. As for multiplayer, I've only played two player games so far, but from what I can tell you can play with more just like Magic. I don't know anything about the tournament meta, and I don't know too much about the various card sets, so I don't know if there's something that specifically has cards geared towards multiplayer like commander or planechase.

Managed to get people into Force of Will. To convince people to get on board, I bought some starter decks, then what I assumed to be the equivalent of a fat pack. Was quite surprised to later realize that it was in fact a Valkyria Chronicles tie-in, especially since once I looked online, the tie-in came out in 2016. Was a pretty pleasant surprise to have my first games consist of dominating as squad 7.

    Non-Magic CCGs

It's pretty amazing how in just two expansions Shadowverse's rotation format has went from "a breath of fresh air and a great way for new players to get started" to "an incredible stale meta that only veteran players can afford to play."

Pretty much any online card game. Magic Online is an exception, since they actually have chess style turn clocks as far as I understand it. But other ones just have timers per turn (with maybe a reduction for the timer of next turn if you hit time out). So you get people who drag out every turn in the hopes that their opponent will concede out of frustration. Magic: Duels (and the Duels of the Planeswalkers games before it) was actually the worst one for this, since you could pause the game for stack interactions and this paused your turn timer as well. There was a timer on the pause, but there wasn't any limit on the number of pauses you could take per turn, meaning you were only limited by the amount of time you wasted in between when a pause expired and when you hit the next pause. You could literally drag out a turn for something like ten minutes.

There's a special hell reserved for people who wait until the timer almost runs out before ending their turn.

  20. Actually now that I think about it, now that we have confirmed that Konami's on board, I want Sparkster or Gillian Seed.
  21. If they were going to put in a non-Simon Belmont they should have gone with Julius. I mean he's the guy who finally killed Dracula after all. Anyway fingers still crossed for Xiaomu.
