I suppose, but even without the law there'd still be debate about whether it was self-defense or not. If Zimmerman's story is true, than he was attacked by Martin and pinned to the ground, thus even without the stand your ground law he'd be able to shoot in self-defense as there's no real way to retreat from that safely. I agree but I still wanna own a Thompson and shoot it though.

There may be something very valuable, like a shitload of money or family heirlooms or the Constitution or a baby or some shit. The definition of "retreating" is a bit iffy. If a gunman is running away, he might just turn a corner for better cover or to reload. If he threw down his gun, put his hands over his head, and said "I'm surrendering" every time he wanted to retreat, then that part of the law wouldn't be needed. But in the middle of a gun fight you really don't have time to determine whether he's leaving for good or he'll be back in a minute. You can't own a submachine gun in this state. You can't buy anything that holds more than ten bullets.

Why, because if someone is on top of you bashing your head in you have a "duty to retreat"?
