I never said it's a bad item. I use(d) it a lot as Engineer, and I like it. I said it's bad at static defense. It can do a lot of things the regular sentry can't, and the reverse is also true. I believe your argument, and correct me if I'm wrong, comes down to this: And I'd agree with that, if the Engineer was using something other than the Gunslinger. But I don't want to parrot Halibut's points, as they're almost exactly mine.

Locked down with mini-sentries? It's more like a cardboard sign saying "dont enter" in crayon. For the engineer to make another in the area, he has to be in that area. So he's basically using the mini-sentry as a regular sentry, which is an idiotic thing to do because the mini-sentry is inferior to the regular sentry in every way once it's built. And what's stopping you from killing the engineer? You're thinking that a mini-sentry is equivalent to a level 3, which it is not.

Has it been given a giant buff since I last played? I never had a problem with it, even with the regen it can be destroyed easily unless you're a scout, but then again scouts aren't exactly known for taking on sentries of any type. Or you can just shoot the Engineer and ignore the sentry until he's dead. I don't know about you guys, but I'd much rather have to face two pea-shooters and a combat Engineer than a level 3 and a tanking engineer.
