Time will tell if Valve does anything. They've since taken down the store page banner, and now the CEO and founder is entering the world of PR. They're obviously recognizing the outrage. Better than them just ignoring it, true? If they don't do anything, I will be severely disappointed. ...Might even not buy the next Valve game or two. I know, so bold! Oh man!

Most of the banned users were being vicious and abusive, honestly. But Gabe was away getting medical work done. He's back. I can certainly believe many people were banned with a large broom that didn't deserve it.

Gaben himself has descended from heaven (literally) to answer our complaints: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/33uplp/mods_and_steam/ Don't know if it's still on going, but he addresses some of the issues stated here. For example, Valve seemingly censoring objections: [–]GabeNewellBellevueCONFIRMED VALVE CEO[S] 1991 points 2 hours ago Well, if we are censoring people, that's stupid. I'll get that to stop. On top of it being stupid, it doesn't work (see Top Gear forums on Jeremy Clarkson). ---------------------------------- My opinion: I have read all of his replies. "Canned PR responses" does not describe them, as some claim. My first introduction to this was a video by Gopher (I posted it), which ended with "keep a calm head and let the dust settle." This has done nothing but benefit me. I am not a Valve shill, I am not a Valve employee, nor am I supportive of Valve's current actions or everything they've ever done. They disappoint me every once in a while. But jesus christ, those community responses are kind of disgusting. Stay classy, internet. Where is the erase format button?

TIAM IV: Guydiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Cockmongler

But it's so GRITTY and REALISTIC. DID I MENTION IT WAS GRITTY? I've always been a DC fanboy, but the current cinematic ratio of suck to good between Marvel and DC has me a sad panda. Whedon, do a Justice League movie pls. Oh! Or a Teen Titans movie! Marvel did Guardians! -
No, it's real money just as with TF2 and Dota 2. Also, I made a thread for this guys ;-;

Somewhere right now Bob Kane and Mark Hamill are gently weeping in a close embrace. -
The donation argument is flawed, unfortunately. Realistically, modders see very little if anything from donations.

It's a 4chan archive. Surprise = 0 -
You guys are ganging up on me like I'm supporting this. I already know all the things you're telling me. I just misread Raison's post, and thought he misunderstood the situation. I also don't think Valve is being malicious in this, but I never said I thought they were handling this correctly. Also, thousands of mods being lost on the nexus is false. It was far less. Excuse me for not overreacting and bullying modders into paste. I've been a member of the Bethesda modding community since 2008. I know how it works, and I can see the effects this whole thing is having and what it might have.

Please, he has to be trolling. It's 4chan, so I'm going to assume that is the case. Trolling until proven insane. What's scary is people actually believe this shit. Whatever. None of them have power. They're all nobodies who people keep at bay with a crazy stick. They can believe what they want as long as they don't hurt anybody :| EDIT: No, it's not 4chan, it's another image board. K. -
I don't think Valve is actually greedy. Everything they throw out has some kind of compromise, and seems like it came from a good idea. This whole thing could've been implemented far worse, for example, no pay what you want system. The idea "Hey, maybe modders can get paid for their work!" isn't a bad one. This was just a bad way to do it. I don't think Valve is greedy, but they're far, far from infallible. You don't charge 25% for something you already were doing for free and have the infrastructure for and not be greedy. A 25% cut is insane. It's mind-boggling. It's 2.5x as much as Ebay, which a lot of people that sell their shit there will tell you, 10% is a fucking lot. 25% is the American tax rate for somebody who has an average income, which, by the way, also means 25% of that 25% cut the modder get goes to taxes. I think that the reason Valve is hunting down donation links so much is because you cannot legally take a cut of donations. Valve is not charging people to put their mods on Steam Workshop. Valve is taking a cut from mods that decide to be for sale on the Steam workshop, which is a service they have not offered before. Free mods still exist and are not going anywhere.

He could just register as a service provider. The Nexus already has.

Chesko did not use animations from another mod. He didn't "Steal" anything. His mod simply referenced Fores New Idles in Skyrim (FNIS) which Fore, the creator, disagree with. FNIS is primarily used as a tool which supports new animations, something the base game does not do.
-
I actually just did a quick talk with one of the modders. They seem to be generally okay with the system, but have some complaints about the 25% split, but the argument against more was that if they had paid more then the backlash might have been even bigger from communities where similar practices are implemented. TF2 for example. Also, seems most of Valve's damage control has been to protect the modders from the backlash. This one in particular was quite alright with how Valve handled that.
-
Exactly, it was a problem. And while I'm not too happy with this whole mod thing, people are blowing it way out of proportion and looking for any reason to hate on the parties involved. Hell, Chesko, a popular modder who had one of his mods with the debut bundle, was bullied off of the internet. And get this, he was the most honest and caring about it. All of his mods would've been free as well as be on the paid side in case people wanted to donate. He was also personally screwed over by the system in that his mod that went up used assets from another mod (FNIS), which he worried about, so he contacted Valve about it who told him it was totally fine, and he (admittedly naively) just went along with. Then Fores (the author of FNIS) complained, so Chesko asked Valve to remove his mods from the Workshop. They refused. Still, people bullied him so much he had to delete his reddit and twitter modding accounts. Yeah, the community is being totally reasonable about this.

Uh, what? This is just an effort to stop spammers and phishers. All you have to do is spend 5 dollars, jesus christ. This has nothing to do with the mod fiasco. It has actually been in effect for a little while now.

To be fair, the rating system was to rate the quality of the mod, not to voice your opinion on Valve's business practices. What happened was essentially the same as a Metacritic score bomb.

Have you found anything about other people having the same issue? It could be a bug in the current release. It ain't, I use it. I got him to send a message to the team behind it. They'll hopefully sort him out.

I've seen enough advertisements for Brazzers to know where this is going. -
I haven't seen any comments about that yet. Another thing to mention is stealing in regards to upload. I saw one prominent modder primarily worried about this because it's even more incentive for people to steal another free mod or its content and upload ti for a price. Most big mods that added new resources were totally open about people using them for their own works. That's going to completely disappear. And what of the tool makers? Are they going to start charging? Will they be pleased with all these paid mods that have only been made possible by their tools? I'm speaking about actual tools like Nifskope, BSA Unpacker, etc to libraries like the Script Extender series.

Inb4 we start listing mods in this thread

I don't know how to feel about this. You can actually refund the mod if you don't like it (within 24 hours), and you can set your price to as low as a dollar USD, but still. What the fuck are the ethics of this. Especially since some popular mod authors (who I have previously highly respected) have put updated versions of their own, highly popular mods, in this program. Which means if we want any future support we need to pay. Like, what the fuck. Many mod authors deserve donations, but... Here's a very good video by Gopher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt2wSvb6rhw Oh god, this comment: SteelBadger13 1 hour ago+PartyRock62 ARRR MATEY! WE LIVE IN THE AGE OF PIRATING MODS!
