So I finished Day Break Illusion/Genei Wo Kakeru Taiyou. It's very clear that it's trying to do the same thing Puella Magi did. It's not as good as Puella Magi, that's for sure. I liked most of it, but the ending is just not very good. One character was tragically killed a little over halfway into the story, and she was magically brought back for the last two episodes. I'd be fine with this (nope not because she was my favourite character in the series not one bit) but she didn't actually contribute much at all! In fact, the final showdown with the main antagonist just boils down to the main character screaming at the top of her lungs as she stabs him. There wasn't really any fighting with anyone else, her friends could have all been having tea back at their home while miss main character just stabs away at the antagonist. On top of this, the main group's two leaders had tremendous power (powerful enough to destroy a magical construct in one hit that three of the other characters couldn't even scratch) but never used it except for the ending, in which they basically just performed a Magical Girl Predator Missile Strike and didn't help with killing the antagonist (not that they needed help, really). Another thing was there were enemies that were essentially shadow-clones of the main group's fighters, and any damage inflicted to them would hurt the person they are a clone of. However, there's nothing really done with this idea, except for one of the characters "tragically" kills herself through her shadow clone. After that, nothing really happens with them, which begs the question, why even have them? There are plenty of other things that could kill them, but they had to devise that and never use it again. That being said, the characters themselves were pretty well done, or at least the main four. Probably because the first half of the show basically focuses on them entirely.
