I randomly joined one of my low-priority discord groups cuz I saw there were a lot of people in a channel. One of them was playing and streaming "Haze", an FPS for the PS3 I've never heard of. I thought it was a relatively intriguing viewing of the game. I was pleasantly surprised by the story, but they reached a point an hour and a half or so in where the person said "and that's where they just... stopped with the story".

I looked up the rest online and 6 of the 7 paragraphs for the plot on Wikipedia were dedicated to that beginning that was neat. A shame the game is actually pretty bad, likely from publisher intervention.

I associate that game (and several others like Inversion) with a specific era of late 2000/early 2010s shooters that probably caused pretty much everyone other than 13 year olds like me to be sick of seeing shooters being churned out nonstop

I don't really have any nostalgia for the lesser known titles of that era like the Hazes and Inversions but they always had a quality about them where there was a cool idea that was bogged down by having to conform to the "template" shooter at the time. I wonder if a little bit further down the line we'll get people trying to revive some of those titles with the idea of "hey maybe we actually will make the game we wanted to make now!"

...It'd be a horrible irony if they did that and then made a bog-standard template game again, just updated to be the 2020 version

Meanwhile I'm still remembering stuff I played last year, not going to add it to the list because it's arguably even less of a "game" than those fangames I played, but Cursed Halo was another extremely fun co-op experience for me and my most halo-brained friend. It's a mod for Halo 1 MCC that adds a bunch of ridiculous weaponry and vehicles to the game, some custom cutscenes, and even an added Mario Kart level that worked surprisingly well. Said friend and I had been following the creator's work modding the game for years and suddenly we were just able to download an entire playable campaign via the steam workshop. I think what really made this work for me is that Halo was the first game where I would just have a blast fucking around with the physics engine, spending hours on Silent Cartographer carting marines around to build up massive grenade piles for warthog jumping. Combining this with things like the gmod tools is a pure stroke of genius an gave me a huge hit of nostalgia. Also there are "d20 grenades" with random effects from summoning a squad of enemies to killing everything on the map, and if you know me, that is the sort of thing I immediately seek out and play around with in any game.

You know some friends of mine talked about that and I kinda forgot it existed until now. I should really play it, especially since wacky campaign mods are my jam (though most of the ones I've sought out and played are Half-Life or Sourcemod ones)

Though we have an issue that there are three of us and Halo 1 is only two players so someone would be left out.

  3. It's really funny seeing a post like this during the time I'm playing Hypnospace Outlaw which is a game that is centrally based around the concept of people's web pages being super-customized reflections of themselves (to an absurd degree, admittedly), and also the search being an extremely vital aspect of finding what you need and exploring since it actually works. As far as I know there wasn't any particular themes about bots though.

I feel like it'd be a fun project to make an actual personal webpage just to confuse people when you have a link to it on modern social media.

If the "robots" are hardsuits, like Bubblegum Crisis, or B-ko's various contraptions, yes.  On the western side of the equation Exosquad counts.

If they are independent androids, no.  So stuff like Saber Marionette J or Battle Angel Alita don't count, though it's definitely a related genre.  But then again Sailor Moon style magical girls without any mechanical aspects are also a very closely related genre.

The key aspect of mecha is having a human controller.  The real question is if you had a human sized robot that was being controlled via remote control a la Tetsujin-28 or Giant Robo.

It's funny because I thought of Bubblegum Crisis as well, Metallic Rouge is sort of one step past bubblegum crisis where they ARE hardsuits but they're layered on an android (though these are blade runner-esque 'very hard to discern from human' types so far so who knows if a twist is coming in the future related to that).

As for if a remote control counts... I'm definitely a layman to the genre but it feels like there's a crucial element missing there if it's ALWAYS remote controlled. Like a manned one that can be remote controlled is different than remote control only.

Final Fantasy XIV is a game my friend loves and I just...never got it. By the time I got through A Realm Reborn and then the, zero exaggeration on number of quests here TWO FUCKING HUNDRED GOD DAMN BULLSHIT UNSKIPPABLE PIECE OF SHIT SIDEQUESTS YOU'RE FORCED TO SLOG THROUGH TO GET TO Heavensward I was pretty checked out, and nothing about Heavensward was interesting enough to draw me back in.

I got lucky in that I started playing right when they pared down some but there are still a lot of those damn quests. This is exactly why I'm in that spot of "I don't know if this is recommendable to anyone, but if they make it then they've made it" kind of situation. Wicket said the same thing to me when I started playing it too.

It's kind of sad because once you get to Lv50+ areas it does pick up, but by then you kinda have to awaken from the stupor that Lv1-50 put you in and it's kind of hard to do so. I still kind of can't really remember anything that happened before Heavensward tbh and I also don't fault anyone for dropping it even afterwards because the game kinda conditions you into boringness for a long time

  6. I kind of forgot one big part of this year in gaming for me and it was Final Fantasy 14 Online. Which I kind of started years ago but my friends dropped and then I spent on and off playing it but kinda got all my progress this last year. This is important because if I'm adding best girl and best boys (since Huff did it) they're all coming from this game. I'll split it up into expansions though I dunno how important it will be to really bother.

    Spoiler

Base game/A Realm Reborn: I wavered a lot on playing through this but it was kind of weird to actually play a real MMO and I glided on that pretty far. The story was... Well a slow burn isn't really the right term. It was kind of a smolder the entire time, but I was sort of just following based on wanting to level up and see more areas. I guess the best praise I can give it is that it set up the world and wasn't so boring that I gave up before we got to the more interesting parts.

Heavensward: This is just where out of nowhere I was like "wait I'm actually getting into this wtf?" I think Estinien probably helped a lot though I liked most of the Ishgardian characters. I also was required to play to this expansion since I named my character after firearms and you need to get here to unlock the gun-toting Machinist job. Overall this was kind of the turning point for me where I grabbed onto the thread of the story and was kinda in for the long haul. I also really enjoyed the Alexander raids, partially because they had cool giant transforming robots and also because I liked those wacky goblins.

Stormblood: This one is pretty contentious and I get it, there's a lot of hot and cold throughout this expansion. I personally don't hate Ala Mhigo as much as other people I know though it is painfully clear that the expansion being set in two completely different areas with different stories hamstringed it. Also an extremely questionable character development that started at the end of Heavensward rears its head here and it made me feel like they really bent over backwards to make it happen and it completely fell flat. Also I hate yotsuyu though the other main villains I either liked or really liked in it once they got the development they needed. It also has one of the most brutal scenes of all time in the Azim Steppe but I wouldn't dare spoil that one. I don't like the Ivalice raids but the last one has a pretty cool midboss.

Shadowbringers: This was "the one" other than Heavensward that people always universally praise and I totally get it. It's just cool and the direction it takes the story and lore is just so fuckin cool I loved it. It also introduced bunny girls to the game so I give it like 12/10. It's almost impossible to talk about without venturing into spoilers though which is a testament to all the lore it drops. I haven't done the featured side content for this one since I just beat it a few days ago, but the main story was very good and the environments and one of the villains in particular was just so damn cool. Also this one introduced Gunbreaker which is the best tank. And speaking of tanks, the Dwarf tribe and its quests were really fun and I enjoyed them a lot, more than any of the other tribes in a different expansion. I loved their bizarre hats and how they always swore in the weirdest ways possible.

And then the best boy/girl mainly so I can just gush about some characters I like from the game:

    Spoiler

Best Girl: Sadu because she's the right kind of psycho gf (not to be confused with the wrong kind of psycho gf, aka yotsuyu). I honestly like everyone on the Azim Steppe since it's a really interesting area and all the clans having their own characterization and gimmick is fun, but the Dotharl obviously win for being suicidally ruthless fighters who don't afraid of anything and their clan leader is basically the paragon of such values. The trio of tribe leaders (her and Magnai and another which is probably a minor spoiler) have a nice dynamic and generally help make the tone of the expansion a little less heavy in a sense without really deflating tension or anything. Also I like her design of white hair with extremely dark skin.

Best Boy: Estinien. This guy wears a mask for most of Heavensward and there's one specific moment where you finally see him smile, and it's only when he's in the middle of stabbing a dragon whilst covered in his blood. He's just so cool bros. Plus the writers do a good job of contrasting his brooding edginess with everyone else that your character adventures with while not really ever making him seem silly.

Best Boy But On The Other Team: This is cheating since Emet-Selch also deserves best boy, and I literally can't say anything about him since it's all huge plot spoilers, but he's the best Shadowbringers character. I'll never forget.

Overall FFXIV is a weird game and I am not really in it for any of the hardcore MMO stuff like raiding, though I like levelling jobs and learning new roles and stuff. I don't really know if I would recommend it just for the story either because it takes a really long time to get to the interesting parts, but once you're there it's pretty cool. It's kind of just hitting a decent blend of everything to keep me on the hook, more or less.

  7. Good to see more Titanfall 2 friends showing up.

I had almost written off RoboCop game since, you know, it's a movie game, but I had seen some gameplay that did make it seem like more of a fun homage than a cash-in. I'll have to keep an eye out for it since I kinda love RoboCop.

I also probably need to play Slayers X too since it seems like the perfect kind of nonsense for me. Though I just bought Hypnospace Outlaw so I feel like I should play that first (not that there's any real continuity, just that I have one already so should probably get that off the backlog first)

I only bought Battlebit this year. It was neat for that it was.

I actually did play a battle of bit this year too. It is pretty cool and honestly it made me glad to see a multiplayer FPS game with graphics like that blow up in popularity, it perhaps gives me hope that large scale games in the future won't kneecap themselves by forcing unreasonable perf demands on players (COUGH planetside 2 COUGH)

Wait, did I play Needy Streamer/Girl Overdose/Overload this year?

The only reason I remembered is my steam review. For some reason I thought everything before like May 2023 was actually 2022.

  9. This year is probably about right even though I really feel like I didn't play anything. Honestly I kinda want to make this years' resolution to be more active and try new things on the games front.

    Spoiler

Wagamama High Spec: Are VNs games? Well whatever, I finished it this year and it was mainly just to play through a game in (mainly) Japanese. As a learning tool I think it worked pretty well. The routes are a little... schizo in terms of tone, three of them have a few heavy moments of rejection or overworking and stuff, and then one is just "lol I misheard my parents and everything will be fine!"  I don't know if I'd recommend it since I intentionally picked it up due to it being kinda standard fare which wouldn't have too many hard words/crazy prose.

Love Live! School Idol Festival 2: Miracle Live: I'm only putting this on there because it's kind of amazing how they rereleased a 2011 phone game in 2023 with the gameplay basically completely unchanged (and a new UI and updates to make the gacha not as asinine). But I really love love live so I guess I am just a sucker. It did kind of rekindle my enthusiasm for the series so that's fun.

Deep Rock Galactic: I think this game is pretty cool... but I don't really know how much I can get into it. I think my biggest issue is that I'm no team player and rarely get people to stack up in a game, and it seems like I'd rather play a PvP game if I was wrangling people, so kind of a lot of things working against it without really a fault to the game itself. It's admirable that they tried to make singleplayer work with the drone guy but it's kind of an impossible task for a game clearly made around coop.

Cyberpunk 2077: Much like most overhyped games that have a disastrous launch, it is solidly okay™. I wouldn't pay full price for it, but I don't think I'd pay full price for any open world RPG. I am still absolutely mystified by the 2.0 version that completely changed pretty much every aspect of the RPG and not for a particularly clear benefit. I guess if you want to play the same game with a different RPG system you can always downgrade it to pre-2.0? It's two games for the price of one! I have nothing to say about the story because no aspect of it resonated with me other than liking having Keanu living rent free in your head and making silly wisecracks.

~~ Games that had a stronger impression below this line (for better or worse) ~~

Needy Girl/Streamer Overdose/Overload: This one probably wins the award for "best gameplay to time spent thinking about ratio" since I played enough for one route end then put it down and spent the rest of the year wondering what the fuck the game is and what I was supposed to get from it. I just don't understand it one bit, there's very little setting, the girl is "omg im so depressed and ironic about it" personified (and whatever things that might characterize her often get contradicted between what she says on stream and what she personally says on twitter), the player isn't really a real character, the game itself is weirdly anachronistic since it's looking like late 90s computing but it's about streaming. I don't get it. I mean the style and UI of the game is cool, but that's like all the positives I have to say about it. If you play the game straightforwardly, which is making the girl succeed at being a streamer, the game basically just shuts the door in your face at the end and says "what are you doing you're not supposed to actually help her"

I initially picked this up because someone I know is very enthusiastic about it and I just don't understand how this game could resonate with anyone, it's like a game made by weird aliens whose only interaction with humanity was shitty lain fansites. I constantly err between "maybe I didn't see enough to understand" and also "maybe I don't want to understand" so I give this a Love/craft. I probably am severely overthinking it and the entire appeal really just boils down to "mentally unhinged gf who cuts herself and woaooaoah retro aesthetic for no reason"

Super Mario Wonder: Contrary to popular belief, the name of this game is not Super Mario Wonderhoy. I haven't played a Mario game since Odyssey, and a 2D Mario game since even before that, so this was a fun return to that world. I think it's probably not very substantial for a full price game but I got it as a gift so... Yeah. I don't really have any insightful takes on this game since I kinda played it just as a surface level fun wa hoo game and didn't think much further than that. It's really fucked up if you're a yoshi fan though, like damn.

Severed Steel: One of those hypermobility shooters with a bullettime mechanic. Plays things really fast and loose, you are invincible while doing "stunts" like wallrunning, and you generally have to kill everyone. Sometimes you have to destroy things instead. It's a small game but it doesn't overstay its welcome and it has a "roguelike" randomizer mode that you can play if you want to squeeze a little more replayability out of it. Also it has a fuckin wild mechanic that I've never seen where while you're in the air your viewport unlocks and you can do a full 360 flip just with the mouse. It sounds disorienting and it is a little, but it's kind of awesome at the same time. Fun game.

Trepang2: This one is more FEAR than Shattered Steel's "Titanfall pilot x FEAR" gameplay, and is clearly a game made by a bunch of people who really liked FEAR. I haven't completely beaten this game but I got through a lot of it, it's very fun. It really does its best with effects and graphics to make things really visceral. The horror segments are... better than FEAR's though they're not really what I'm there for. It's just one of those games that makes you really feel like you're an unstoppable action hero which I am always into. It also really makes you appreciate how effective human shield maneuvers are, apparently.

The Finals: Kind of an out-of-nowhere thing for me, I had heard maybe a tiny bit about it but then my friends (literally) forced me to play it and I was like "wait this is actually kind of cool?" I fuckin love destruction physics in games and this one does not half-ass it, and it's a multiplayer game too which kind of was something I never thought would happen. Definitely a game I will play here and there, though I dunno if it's one I could really no-life since it's so team oriented. I also sincerely applaud this game because there's a pistol as a primary weapon and it's not completely neutered just because "pistols in games have to suck or be backup weapons"

I also give an honorable mention to TF2 because the latter half of the year I fell back in love with the Huntsman and fucking hell that weapon is so much fun to use.

  10. I had a really quick dream a few days ago about my shower water turning to blood and instead of being a horrifying experience I was just annoyed that my dad seemed to blame me for it happening, and that I had to run out into the rain to get it all off of me.

Somehow I thought of the rain, which is a rare occurrence out here, but not that we have a swimming pool that would be a much faster way to clean off. Maybe I didn't want to get the water all bloody.

  11. I've been trying to find japanese stuff to watch on youtube related to games or whatever I like to help get some immersion for language and I feel like there are multiple forces at work trying to prevent me from finding things organically.

Like first there's just the language differences and how searches don't like crossing a language barrier, then there's just the innate quirks of searches sucking (gyoku has shared his research into this many a time), and then on top of that there's automatic translations that ship in to completely replace titles of videos, but only if the system is confident in the translation or something, so for a channel half of the video titles can be translated and half might not be.

I've just been sticking to love live related stuff since they are well organized due to being produced by a professional multimedia team, but you can really feel an invisible wall at times. Probably doesn't help that I'm trying to avoid vtubers, though if I find any playing games I am interested in watching like Noita or whatever then maybe it'd be fine. As long as they're not filthy EN ones.

Probably the real answer is to go to an actual native jp site, which I guess is a bit obvious.

  12. I feel like those moments are the type a lot of people play for, it's definitely a draw of a pen and paper RPG and something that couldn't happen in something like a video game.

Unfortunately I'm a terrible flake so I don't have much from any games I played or ran.

I've still got my gifted items with names from the old SPUF server, weapons from Facade and Silent and some changed names I can't recognize.

Not a famous name or anything, but as one of the resident Deus Ex fans I'd craft a Widowmaker for you.

I'm gonna have to play more Engineer now!

Maybe I should take that approach for Heavy items now that I think about it.

  14. You know I have a few items tagged and/or crafted by SPUFriends in TF2, but I wouldn't mind having more now that I've been playing it a bit recently. If any of you guys ever bother crafting weapons there's a few I wouldn't mind having some cool "crafted by" names on:

    -Disciplinary Action

    -Back Scatter

    -Dragon's Fury

    -Tide Turner

-G.R.U. (or any heavy items but honestly I still don't play heavy often so they might not get much use)

    -Widowmaker

    -Crusader's Crossbow

    -Shahanshah

I think the Dragon's Fury is token craft and any others like that are probably asking for too much but hey, just if anyone wants to contribute to some minor sentimental value to pixels in a really old video game

Why I do not regret spending an average of 30 minutes studying Kanji, grammar and general reading for 3 years straight:

Because people like this get paid to localize anime and manga:

    GAwpgujWsAA_tHz?format=jpg&name=small

"Lame translation" = "it's not a hip wacky translation so no one gives me back pats."

"You are already dead" is legitimately a great translation for that line, especially since Kenshiro means that literally.

Honestly I try my absolute best to not ever learn much about "localisation" because almost every single thing I've read when it comes to who is doing it and why they do it makes my blood boil

I mean I can't avoid it when I'm watching something and the subs and what's actually being said don't match, but it's easy to put out of your mind unless it's constantly happening. So for my own sake I try not to look too far into it all.

Some day Sanae will insist that "retro" means PS3, and that the PS5 isn't that old.

I've seen versions of that joke getting "updated" already which feels like it completely is missing the point of the joke but what do I know

I did like a recursive version of it where Sanae is saying that the "Sanae is saying that the N64 isn't retro" isn't a retro meme and instead "touhou hijack lol" is an actual old joke though

The problem is that Outlook autocorrects B) to B).  (Augh, SPUF does it too! In a worse way than Outlook, since at least there if you backspace it undoes the autocorrect.)

I don't actually have any help, but thank you for reminding me of the wonders of dumb emote parsing. My personal favourite from oldSPUF was "HL2:biggrin:M" which often snuck its way into source engine patch notes from official valve devs and mods

  18. I'm sure most half life fans out here already know about this but there's a really awesome commentary playthrough of half life from a valve employee being uploaded right now. As a rabid half life fan this kinda stuff is so cool to see, he shows off stuff like early design documents, old names that were voted on for the project, even some old renders / concept art.

I love how he brings up that every single person that playtested Anomalous Materials bobbed their heads to the HEV suit equip music.

  19. The format of split-screen versus even for the story mode is pretty interesting since I've not really seen that outside of puyopuyo and/or tetris (though maybe this is more common in games than my narrow focus in games would suggest). This kind of makes me want to give it a try to see if I like how it plays (also what kind of person am I that I haven't really played a single touhou game?)

Plus getting some experience on bullet hell games other than orange juice stuff might be nice.

Speaking of this does anyone know of a texting client that lets you filter texted reactions because HOLY SHIT WHY THE FUCK DID SMS AND MMS NEED THOSE I HATE HAVING SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY TEXT SOMETHING AND THEN I GET FOUR TEXTS ABOUT HOW PEOPLE HEART THAT TEXT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  21. You know I really do need to find a model of headset that doesn't seem to always crack on the same part of the band. I'm not actually sure if that's an issue with how I wear or store the headsets, or the headsets I buy (probably the case since I just get cheapish logitech ones), or just head problems.

I don't even really have issues with the headsets for sound or anything, I just feel like it's messed up that I've had to toss out several not because they don't play sound anymore but just because a piece of plastic broke on them. Anyone have the lowdown on better build quality headsets?
