Usually this stuff happens when Windows is trying to download updates that are reliant on another update being installed first. Its dumb as hell but they don't download automatically in chronological order as far as I know. This tool generally works decently, but your mileage may vary.

If you're really set on composing digitally I would get comfortable with a more professional DAW like Ableton Live or FL Studio because they really aren't as hard to use as it might appear. Musically you could look to a lot of theory and shit but if you aren't too interested in that and want baby steps just start with some samplepack or make your own loops. Honestly I would start with actual instruments if you know any that would be suited to whatever type of music you want to be composing. Digital tracks are cool and all but nothing beats the actual thing if you're capable of playing it.
