Well yes, but we've stopped doing a lot of ridiculous things that used to be part of our culture (e.g. segregation). I'm not sure if that's a good enough excuse to continue treating employees like cattle. I said I don't agree with Konami's practices but both measures do make sense. I'm almost certain that many other companies do this kind of stuff too, but we rarely see stuff like this pop up.

Almost all of HiRez is pissed at the higher ups. Plenty of people were literally just told to stop working on Tribes and suddenly switch over to Smite. I remember there being reports of people working on Tribes in their free time and later being told to completely drop the game. In February, one of the HiRez employees dumped 100 Tribes Acend GOTY steam keys that were lying around since the company has no intent to profit off the game anymore. The only one at HiRez who actually does anything for Tribes anymore is HiRez APC who occasionally posts stuff on the Tribes Ascend blog. There's still an active competitive scene especially in Euro. PUGs get played often and is the main way to play a game now.

The games industry is commonly riddled with sketchy business practices. Shareware commonly was used as an easy way to launder money and plenty of developers face wage theft, but I don't think this is quite as troubling as previous situations we've seen before, namely the EA Spouse incident. Timed breaks make sense from a cultural standpoint in Japan because of the ridiculous amounts of workaholics and is a fairly standard practice in the country. Monitoring employees also makes sense to prevent internal theft. I won't agree with everything Konami has done in recent years, but from a business standpoint it makes sense.

The only objective HiRez exists for is to troll as many people as humanly possible. They're just waiting until they can screw over all the non-DOTA or LoL MOBA players with SMITE.
