I know very little about the doctrines of Islam itself, but from what I heard a while ago, the Koran outright states that you should not be worshiping and idolizing Mohammed, and that he simply a messenger for God's will. He's not supposed to be any more important than any of the other major prophets that came before him, he's simply the last one. And that's where a lot of the current issues come from, when people are putting a prophet over the god he speaks for. Of course, this knowledge could be completely false, and I could have just made a jackass out of myself, but I think it makes sense. Won't deny Muhammad was a conquering warlord, but most the Islamic conquests were carried out after his death.
