  1. Very small thoughts on Wonder Woman 86. Contains spoilers, but overall did not really enjoy.

    Spoiler

I didn't appreciate the 90 minutes of buildup before anything happened, and the premise that everyone sent in wishes to the guy only for there not to be a horrible wish like "I wish everyone would die right now" (I get he could not grant that wish, but he granted a wish where someone DID die) is obscenely stupid to me. Also the chances of the world going back to any sort of normality after the entire world almost ENDED FROM NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS because somehow everyone decided to take their wish away, is obscenely stupid. I'm usually somewhat okay with suspending disbelief - I've really been enjoying Stargate: SG-1, but this movie was so so rough. I don't even want to get into the things like "would someone who wished for their terminal illness to go away, actually rescind that?".

Ugh, 2.5 hours with like 30 minutes of enjoyable scenes, 10 minutes of great scenes, and everything else boring or insulting.

  2. The only games I've played that have come out this year are Phasmophobia for 4 hours and 2 hours of Back 4 Blood alpha

I'll definitely buy Gloomwood when it finally comes out though, the demo was fun.

I think the game I have enjoyed the most this year has been Final Fantasy XIV. Reading Wulff's post on it got me to give it another try after my friend and I who were actually dedicated to it found a third person willing to play with us. We're on the edge of starting Heavensward (the first expansion) and I'm actually going to be a NERD and buy an MMO subscription soon.

I'm stuck in an ever-happening state of playing 2 of my 3 games between SMITE, Apex Legends, and FFXIV.

I assume the Spy invis fix in the Smissmas update fixes this very thing. Pretty cool, very fast fix.

The fix in the update added support for all of spy's cosmetics to actually be able to cloak. Some of his cosmetics could only show up as either fully visible or fully invisible, but now they should all be able to gradually cloak. They also fixed certain items like the Saxton hale hat from Jungle Inferno, or the Dapper Disguise spy handsome jack mask to no longer become a solid color.

This spy cloak thing will most likely not be fixed, but they might apply a band-aid solution to it if they even care since it's so minor. It can only really become a problem if people discover how to do the more powerful version of it.

  4. I dreamt people were discussing a sort of phantom administrator account (with orange community mod color) that occasionally appeared on SPUF. In this dream, TSC apparently had admin access on SPUF, and had an animated black and white Captain Picard avatar of him winking and performing a toast with wine. There was a bit more to it, like the admin account would post, and TSC would say "the account doesn't appear in the database so I have no idea how its posting" and whatnot. I don't remember much else, but it was still interesting to me.

I usually only play one game at a time. I don't like splitting my focus between multiple. Right now I'm playing Pikmin 3 Deluxe; I beat the game on Hard once, now I've gotten platinum on every mission and every day of each side story, and am gonna replay it on Ultra-Spicy and 100% it there, then I will be finished with it. I am also playing Don't Starve again, cause I got the itch to and wanted to take a break from Pikmin so I didn't finish it so quickly, so now is one of the rare times where I am playing more than one game at once. Before this I was playing Minecraft, and my world has gotten to a very satisfying point and I want to go build a new base, but I'm waiting until the Caves and Cliffs update so I can build it in new worldgen.

I wish I could play Pikmin 3 Deluxe, but I didn't find Pikmin 3 on the Wii U to be anywhere near Pikmin 2 in terms of replayabiilty. The most replayable parts would be the challenge mode, but they scuffed that even harder in the original. I had such a bad taste and the pricing for the DLC was so rough that I couldn't bring myself to buy the actually good content on the Wii U.

I can't bring myself to buy a game I purchased 7 years ago just to get the things that I should have gotten 7 years ago. I would definitely enjoy the new content, but I can't justify dropping $60 on that while setting aside ~$600 for computer stuff, and ~$60 for Final Fantasy XIV.

The focus on strong, good-looking worlds felt a lot worse to me than the almost roguelike caves of Pikmin 2. I found most of the bosses to not be that fun to fight since they decided to let you chip away at them instead of it being all-or-nothing like the previous games' bosses.

Something to tide me over has been Pikhacker's romhacks.

I always said to myself that if I ever took on a big personal dev project that I would add co-op multiplayer to the PIkmin 2 campaign, and I was pleasantly surprised to see his attempt at it supports even 4 players. I am currently awaiting for the version that give each player their own full screen window, which is currently in development.

  6. Games today are separated into four categories or so, and I've found people generally can only take on 2 at a time. The categories I can really think of are:

    1. Live Service games. This includes battle royales, MOBAs, and MMOS. They generally have a battle pass, take up a majority of time. Played by people all the time but are generally not talked about, take up a large chunk of gaming time for a lot. Some play these as their default, and often feel like these games are "crack" and play it even if they hate them.

    2. Fad games. The games played by online influencers, currently would be Among Us and Phasmaphobia in my recent memory. I think Call of Duty falls into here too. Really don't take up a lot of time for more than a month at most.

    3.  "Completable" multiplayer games. Thinking stuff like minecraft, terraria, factorio, monster hunter worlds (is this an mmo?). Kinda replaces live service games for a lot of people, as you can dedicate a lot of time into these for weeks at a time, but you eventually complete a session.

    4. Dense singleplayer experiences. An unsustainable source of gaming, but people make time for if a game is good enough.

Exceptions would be stuff like counter-strike, l4d2, old games with dedicated community servers.

I write this up to ask, what games are y'all dedicating your time to right now? I only really play 4 games right now. SMITE, Apex Legends, Final Fantasy XIV, and a little bit of L4D2. My steam "recently played" list is honestly pretty sad compared to the past.

If I wasn't forced onto being the head admin of a Left 4 Dead 2 league, I probably would've dropped that after the week of the Last Stand update. Talking to the community update team has been fun though.

There is no way you gave a genuine and thoughtful placement to so many people; I don't even know how long it would take to watch one video from all of them. Prove the validity of each slot placement by writing two sentences elaborating on each.

SMITE has over 112 Gods to play as and I could write a paragraph on each with my thoughts in them if I really had to. Doesn't seem farfetched to me.

  8. Every piece of information that comes out regarding the L4D2 community update in a week makes me extremely excited. As someone who spent 200+ hours fixing up the maps, seeing the tools that I will have access to in the future is extremely awesome.

If I didn't have a laptop specifically for work given to me by work, I would have had to install no less than four malware programs on something I care about by now.

CPU is constantly shot to pieces by programs randomly starting which, by their own admission, can record all keystrokes, turn on the webcam (without necessarily turning on the indicator light), record the display, etc.

Luckily a couple of them I only need for one or two things so I can uninstall them afterwards (and then reinstall them when they are needed again).  Though I'm sure they don't actually do a clean uninstall.

I die a little bit every time my Chem professor recommends TeamViewer to students if they ask for help with excel spreadsheets.

  10. Extremely unexpected announcement, but I welcome it.

I rented Hyrule Warriors on Wii U and my sister and I enjoyed the splitscreen a lot that you could do on Wii U. Regretted not owning it, but didn't want to buy a game that had DLC we didn't want to buy/a game we already completed the main story for. I'm generally not a fan of Dynasty Warrior type games, but this premise is pretty baller.

  11.

Thoughts, particularly on the last anouncement.

    Spoiler

As much as they went to advertise this to everyone (people who don't own the originals, people that haven't replayed in ages, or enthusiasts who want every nintendo product) incentivizing those on the fence to purchase based on the fear of missing out, the All Stars release is a tad disappointing. Realistically you get a resolution increase, 16:9 sunshine, and joycon galaxy support.

These games are over 13 years old, so Galaxy and Sunshine finally getting a rerelease is cool, but it's not like the original All-Stars game where they actually redid them.

Honestly the only question one should really have is, do you want to spend $60 on getting portable Sunshine and Galaxy? It honestly reminds me of my days as a young teen and watching those people that made portable gamecubes and wiis and being extremely jealous. As someone who still has a CRT in my room with a gamecube/wii plugged in, I don't see much of a point for me to get this myself. I never felt the need to play through Super Mario 64 since the DS remake was my first "playing" of it. I also have played/replayed Sunshine/Galaxy in the last few years, so it's not super important for me to get it.

Now, when is that second patch to the Super Mario Sunshine co-op mod?

Anybody else playing this? I've thought of picking it up a few times, and now seems a good time to jump in.

I keep wondering if I should dive into this, but it's never something I've really cared to download in the past, so it's not something I've wanted to do now. When I feel tf2 I like playing current tf2.

  13. I didn't buy DOOM until it was 15 dollars, and so I'm going to do the same for DOOM Eternal.

I liked finding all of the secrets and whatnot in DOOM 2016, but it wasn't the "GREATEST GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!" as everyone was saying.

Also delaying buying a graphics card.

All I really know is that the Bison and the Sandman got nerfed so hard that they are mostly useless. Removing both penetration and multihit on the Bison and then removing the stun from the Sandman were the final nails for them.

There was also a third nerf to the bison which reduced its projectile size after people complained that it was too big.

They went back on the penetration nerfs and the bison is back to penetrating enemies, however its projectile size is a fraction of what it used to be. rip DAT BISON

  15. I've always been a firm believer in using the disciplinary action over the escape plan. Being able to whip a teammate and then go into a fight with a few seconds of speed can give you the opening edge in a fight.

I agree with you that there aren't really any weapons that scream out "I'm overpowered!" whenever I play. Though I'm still sad about some of the weapons that are underpowered.

The Dragon's Fury  got over-nerfed for sure in the Blue Moon Update. I heard it best from someone else that requiring hitscan-level-accuracy on a projectile-based weapon (you have to hit center of mass to get the extra pressure cooldown) is just extremely annoying. As it stands now you're better off using the Phlog if you want high damage with weak/no airblast.

The Fists of Steel are also kind of annoying because they way they implemented it's nerf is actually broken, and the reduced healing gained only applies if a medi-beam is attached to you while you have the fists out, so if a medic starts healing you when you have your minigun out and you later swap to the fists of steel, then the nerf doesn't even exist as long as the medic doesn't break the beam. In the same vein, if a medic starts healing you when you have the FoS out, then you'll be stuck at 390 overheal (if you swap to the minigun in this state, the medic gains max Uber rate as long as he doesn't break the beam, so heavy is the best Uber builder).

The second part of the FoS nerf was the slower holster speed, but that doesn't matter because you can just swap from FoS to sandvich to minigun and only add like 0.01 extra seconds to your switching time. The one exception is when your sandvich is on cooldown.

Also apparently a hot take is that the ambassador nerf isn't even that bad. It removed some fun from the weapon but where it really shined was 102 burst damage which can kill any light class if you hit the headshot and butterknife them. People compares its DPS too much to the stock revolver even though it should be a discussion about burst damage.

Regardless of my qualms, I still think the game is fine weapon wise. I am an Iron Curtain purist (die tomislav heavies).
