  12. I am just having a shitty week. Monday- took first exam in photography history- pretty sure I bombed. Tuesday- phone debacle. Thursday- get assignment back in Jacksonian America- C-, note "I think we should talk." Friday- get midterm in American Revolution back, I thought I'd done really well on it. 74. Fuck. I'm freaking out right now.
  13. So I ended up just starting it on my own. Current word count, 341 (1 page in Word), needs to be 3000/10 or so. Enjoy: The night sky is darker than it used to be. That might sound odd, but it’s the best way I can think of to put this whole mess in perspective. When something big is going on, I like to think of it in small-scale terms. It helps me focus on things. And something really big is going on. It’s been going on for about four months now, and shows no sign of stopping. The stars are vanishing. As in, they’ve apparently ceased to exist. It started, as I said, about four months ago. A small page on an astronomy Internet forum noted, almost casually, that one of the stars in the Big Dipper, the one on the end of the handle named Alkaid, couldn’t be seen for some reason. The general consensus seemed to be that it wasn’t a big deal. Maybe there was just something blocking the view between Earth and Alkaid. About two weeks later, Cassiopeia vanished, all five stars of it. That raised some eyebrows. NASA and ESA both released statements that were, basically, “hell if we know.” Still, there wasn’t too much in the way of concern until the North Star of all things blinked out about a month ago. That got everyone in a tizzy. Predictably, conspiracy theorists loved it. I wonder if they would actually be happy about dying in an alien invasion or something. Would they grin and say, we told you so? I mean, as last words go, those are actually pretty decent, but still. I think I’d prefer living. Speaking of me, you’re probably wondering where I fit in all of this. So am I. My name is Simon. I’d rather not tell you my last name. I work at the Air and Space Museum in Washington. If you think that’s cool, I should probably mention I work the gift shop, which is significantly less cool. It is pretty funny to see them selling “updated” star charts though. What, did someone just get a black marker and cover up a few spots? Ideas for the rest: I'm secretly harboring an alien. He looks like my avatar (so a space-fish in a borrowed trenchcoat) He's not an invader, he's a refugee because his planet was near one of those stars and it vanished, so his home planet sent a bunch of "ambassadors" out to find a place they can live. Now I've got to figure out if the government would pull a District 9 on them. also I need two names for the alien- his "alien" name and the name I'd call him for lack of being able to pronounce said alien name.

Friend brought Xenoverse to gaming club. Fun, albeit slightly clunky controls. Probably going to get it though.

  17. I've been in a bit of a funk the last week or so. Grades in two of my classes are slipping, my temper has been flaring up again. I think I'm in a state of general ennui because I will be graduating college in May if all goes well. Also I'm getting stir crazy from being stuck inside all the time. Any ideas on cheering up? I think I'm going to take a couple weeks off from gaming outside of the once per week club meetings, maybe that'll help.
  18. Speaking as someone who joined in the pootis invasion of april 2012, I can only give that portion of the story. Bunch of the people on this forum decided to troll bigSPUF's TF2 server. It did not work out as planned... and in the video they uploaded to youtube and bigSPUF, there was a link to this forum. I still fondly remember my response in that thread:

I think I'm gonna do a brief review of Kara no Kyoukai, now that I've had a bit to process it. Kara no Kyoukai (either Garden of Sinners or Boundary of Emptiness, depending on translation) is a seven-movie series. Movies 1-4 and 6 are about an hour each, 5 and 7 are 2 hours. Because the movies are in skewed chronological order (chronologically it's 2-4-3-1-5-6-7), spoilers are a bit difficult to dodge. I'll try to do the best I can and summarize just the early bits. The two leads are Shiki Ryougi and Mikiya Kokutou. Shiki is a young woman who is detached and cold towards other people. Due to the events of movie 2 (first chronologically), she winds up in a coma for two years. Upon waking, she finds herself with an unusual ability: the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. See lines on everything, including people, inanimate objects, and magical effects. Cut said lines with a knife or other sharp object? Thing gets cut. Downside? She can't turn the eyes off initially. This leads her to accept an offer from Touko Aozaki: work for her at a supernatural detective agency, and she'll teach her to control the Eyes. The other key thing with Shiki is that she is... somewhat bloodthirsty. The Eyes do not help with that. So she's doing this work both to understand her powers, and satisfy her desire to knife things. Mikiya, meanwhile, is the normal dude who attempted to connect with Shiki before the coma. He's the normal one, there's no getting around that. However, he's really perceptive, selfless and an overall nice guy in general. Because of his connection with/feelings for Shiki, he also works for Touko. Mikiya's role is the human touch. He's the joint protagonist, and his bond with Shiki is basically the driving force in Shiki's development. I'm not saying as much about him because he's not as complexas Shiki- but he's still a vital character to the series and also a very good character in general. The third main character is Touko Aozaki, whose job is basically "Explain plot, explain magic, help out when necessary." She's also a bit eccentric- she's doing all of this on a whim, and has a tendency to go into philosophical soliloquies seemingly at random. But oh dear god you do not want to piss her off. Overall rating: A. The only one that's a bit weak is 6, but that's probably the point- 5 is insane, and 7 is the equally insane grand finale, so 6 makes for a decent breather. Movie 7, though. Full gamut of human emotion in about twelve minutes during the climax. It was absolutely incredible. Do give these movies a try. They're animated by Ufotable and Kajiura does the music, so that part is just plain excellent.
