Hunger isn't intended to make the game harder, per se. Its major impact is that your health can suffer less acute damage whilst absorbing more chronic damage. You can't instantly recover eight hearts by ramming porkchops into your face, but you can get away with making a few risky jumps in caves without rapidly exhausting your healing items. I agree that PvP is horribly broken and that potions just make that worse, but that doens't really make them pointless. I think they could work quite well if a few offenders, such as Strength, were toned down. Heck, I wrote a plugin for someone to weaken Strength potions for that very reason!

I can see why the End seems thinner than paper, but what's the reasoning behind the hunger bar and potions?

This's a problem that those in scientific fields must overcome. I was discussing a similar with my synthetic biology design group. People automatically assume that "genetic engineering" means making movie monsters and kicking fetuses for fun. It's actually an exciting field that's still in its infancy- we're just trying to figure out how this unimaginably complex system works, bit by bit. Just providing the facts does nothing. You have to win hearts and minds- that's something I'm very interested in doing.

As a chemist, it's incredibly frustrating to see people using scary-sounding chemical names to justify not vaccinating their children. There's no excuse. Refusing to vaccinate hurts not only the child but also the community as a whole- some people do have severe reactions to vaccines due to compromised immunity systems or allergies, so they can't get vaccinated. Refusing to contribute to herd immunity puts others at risk.

I'm just waiting for the Spirit Breaker suicide charges.
