    TIAM: General Gaming edition

My first game was Mario Kart: Super Circuit for the GBASP, good times, I still have it too. As for my first console game, it was Mario Kart: Double Dash!!! for the Gamecube. I'm just now realizing how much of a coincidence this is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWY4-u9Ewdc So I've noticed. I like how they realized the first one was so bad it was good, and went "Fuck it" and just went all ridiculous, not caring what anyone thinks. Anywho, finally watched Frozen today to see what was all the hub-ub about it was. Totally overrated, but not bad. I noticed how ironic in that agreed to marry on the day just met, and scolds her for marrying someone they just met. It's ironic because most Disney cartoons have the hero/heroine marrying the person they rescue just days after meeting them a the end of the movie.

    The F2P Model

Over the past several years, we've seen the rise of the mobile market, and with it, the rise of the Free-to-Play, or "F2P", business model, for both mobile and console machines. Please keep in mind, this is not a general discussion about F2P games, but the business model itself and its effect on the gaming industry. Now, for those of you who don't know, how the F2P model works is that customers are able to play a game they don't have to pay money for up front. Instead, developers gain revenue from in-game store transactions where you can buy anything the developer puts into the game, from cosmetics models and skins, to game altering items such as a gun or a piece of armor, some of which can be huge upgrades to the stuff you are given when you first start the game. Some games have a "F2P Version" and a "Premium" or "Full Version" where you can pay a little money to have access to objectively better items and cosmetics than the free version would get you. Please note that the "F2P Version" is not to be confused with a demo. Demos are a standalone application that only allow you to play a small part of a game to try it out in order to get you interested in buying the full priced game. A F2P Version comes with all the basic things in order to play the game, such as characters, maps, items, etc. as well as integration with Premium players for multiplayer games. Sometimes, developers combine both methods in order to squeeze as much money as possible out of customers. This is generally looked down upon customers due to the sheer money-grab nature of combining both methods. This general rise of the F2P trend over the past several years has received some skepticism and criticism from consumers. Most of the criticism stems from the fact that many developers make a F2P game and then proceed to add items in their transaction store that give buyers a huge advantage compared to the free stuff, which in multiplayer games, is quite troublesome for non-premium players. This is commonly referred to as "Pay-to-Win" or "P2W" as you are practically forced to buy items from the store if you want to progress anywhere in the game. The argument here is that if you want to enjoy the full game, you should buy things from the store/pay for premium, as the developer needs revenue in order to keep the game running. Also that you don't have to pay for the game to play it, thus, F2P players should not complain as they can just uninstall if they don't like it. The most common counterargument against this is that although they are technically true, it is still unethical and it's just milking a cash cow in order to make a quick buck, and could also lead to other immoral practices, such as installing viruses onto the client, and other things. There are other problems that come about with F2P games, such as a constant cheater problem, as hackers don't have to pay for the game, and thus there's no loss when getting banned aside from having to create a new account/reinstalling the game. There's also the common perception that F2P games are "ruining" the mobile market by over-saturating app stores with terrible quality clone games whose only purpose is to squeeze as much money out of a consumer as possible. It also leads to a rather terrible attitude between premium and free players, as since you have to buy items to get upgrades, it leads to the misconception that paying for upgraded stuff makes a player skilled compared to a F2P player. Even if said F2P player has been in the game much longer than the Premium user and just hasn't spent any money all of this time. Now the big question, is the F2P business model been overall good for the gaming industry, or bad? What are your guy's opinions on the F2P model and its effect on the gaming industry as a whole? Discuss.

    AMAs - The Road Ahead

Series 2 would allow for questions people wanted to ask, but couldn't. I'd also like a "Group AMA" subforum or something. Also please ban long copypastas. (EvilBrain and Firebug I'm looking at you two) The rule should be no more than 5 questions and the person who posted can't ask anymore until the AMAer has answered his/her post.

I've been recently testing with the B.A.S.E. Jumper and jump maps. Surprise, surprise, it breaks them completely. It even helps Demo with jumps he can't make normally. Though I wonder if someone in the jump map community could create a map specifically built for the B.A.S.E. Jumper, that would be interesting.
