Plenty of action from episode 1 and onwards, weird (and in extent interesting) enemies, cool weaponry and gear, not afraid to swat characters like flies in terms of death. It's like the perfect recipe to hype your typical Shounen fan into thinking they're watching something "beyond" a regular Shounen. Entirely this. The Titans are bizarre (and silly) enough to attract viewers hoping for cool fight scenes with giant monsters. ... oh christ it's literally eva without mechs and stupider monsters isn't it: giant monsters attacking after X years of living in a sort of stability people looking to take advantage of the attacks for their own nebulous goals teenagers getting thrown at the thing because conventional weapons have no effect psychological pseudodrama

Not really. It may be the most popular shonen manga running at the moment, but not the most successful series to ever exist in Japan. It's the highest selling manga in the history of Jump Magazine.

If we're talking Japan, One Piece is the most successful anime/manga by a ludicrous margin. Worldwide, I'm going to say DBZ- it was basically the primary influence for a good 60% of shonen series in the last decade and a half. Not to say that Evangelion isn't way up there, I'm just saying it's not quite at the absolute top of the list. Although it's still the most mindbendingly catchy OP ever.

see, F/SN the visual novel has too much plot. And by that I mean exposition. Imagine getting bombarded with literally ninety of that roughly an hour and a half in.
