    Random Image Thread: Animu Edition

Somehow Gundam has become known as the effective start of anime, despite the existence of famous series like Space Battleship Yamato, Mazinger Z, Ashita no Joe, Lupin III (green jacket) all predating it, not to mention the really ancient stuff like Tetsujin 28, Astro Boy or Q-Taro. I'm okay with that.
  2. Somehow this is all the fault of Watchmen.
  3. In Up one of the main themes was Carl moving on with his life beyond his childhood dreams and his plans with Ellie. So it was only natural in the story that he would go up against his childhood hero, who was also adored by Ellie. Since that went well, and because everyone likes a twist (or so executives think) they just started doing the same thing in later movies. Sometimes it works, but more often it's just something that happens without working with the wider themes of the story. And it's definitely not really a twist at this point.

Ehh... Foxgirls having hair tails with colored tips isn't that uncommon. Consider for example Xiaomu, or Carta Issue from Gundam: IBO. And the design has come up in various places in western animation. But I'll admit that this is the first time that I've seen it specifically with the twin-tails cut. Usually there's either more than one "hair-tail", or they are really bangs with long hair in the back.

This picture really pisses me off: Not because it is an example of this bowsette thing going far beyond where it should have, but because it isn't lore accurate. Miles Prower only has two tails, but you can clearly see three in this picture. (Five if you count the twintails)
  7. Log onto Pixiv. See that several of my bookmarked artists uploaded images, even though none of them have uploaded anything in weeks. Every single new image is Bowsette.

I give Gundam Build Divers a solid 6.5/10 It wasn't great but it didn't offend me on a personal level.
  9. If Doomguy gets in, Daisy should get in.
  10. Recently Japan has just been huge on jumping on fads. I know I talk about virtual youtubers a lot, but that was a great example of how crazy it can get. For a while there's only Kizuna AI and those Eilene videos everyone forgot about/didn't know existed in the first place. But then in like two weeks last December we suddenly have four more superstars, with Nekomasu in particular going from like 100 subscribers to around 100,000 in only a few days, and in a month or two after that there's literally hundreds of channels with at least some popularity. All you need is the right spark. Should be interesting to see what Nintendo does with this. Normally I would say nothing, but Bowsette has gotten pretty crazy so I think they'd have to at least give it a nod. Bowsette's not going to be official though, people who think that are still waiting for Goku in Smash.
  11. Somehow I legitimately like almost every piece of sonic the hedgehog music.

On a different anime-related note, I just realized that we are pretty much guaranteed to have a virtual youtuber anime in at most two years. I don't know who it will star. Obvious bets are Kizuna AI and Mirai Akari (since the supposed purpose for her creation was to generate enough money to make an anime), but it could be anyone. Whoever it is there will almost certainly be crossovers anyway.

To be honest, Sam and Max works better when it doesn't get a chance to build up a big continuity. By the end of Season 3 I didn't know if they were mocking the idea of having too much continuity, or actively trying to retcon some events to make it all work together, but either way it felt like it had drawn on too long. That's not to say that I don't want Sam and Max. But I like how I can read the comics, then go to the cartoon show, then go to the Lucas Arts game, then go to the Telltale Games and each time get an experience which is recognizably Sam and Max, but a different take on things with most of the characters different. I'm sure eventually they'll show up again in some other form.
  15. Trying to set up wireless printer on new computer. Get drivers, doesn't appear on network. Reset network settings on printer, still doesn't show up. Go to other computer on network, which was already set up to use the printer, and it doesn't work there anymore either. Reset network settings a second time, still doesn't work. Double check IP address in router and on printer. They match but manually enter in the correct IP address on printer anyway. Now printer shows up on new computer so I add it. Try printing something. Doesn't work. Try again just to be sure. Doesn't work. Go to other computer, and try to print off two things there. Doesn't work. Go back to printer and hit "back" from the main menu. Suddenly it says it is receiving data. But it doesn't print. Go back to main computer, try to troubleshoot in various ways, including fiddling with firewall, for about ten minutes. Nothing works. Open up properties in device manager and do nothing else, suddenly all the previous documents print. Try printing things on both computers, everything works fine without delay. Computers really are mystical creatures.

Just read the comics. I liked the Wolf Among Us as much as anyone, but then I read Fables and realized the reason it was good was because the setup in the comics was so good that even a mediocre Telltale retelling still was better than average.

Tales from the Borderlands was good, because while the choices often didn't matter for the plot, they still were used to deliver good punchlines. (Also they made a better use of having two protagonists in this sort of game than David Cage ever did). Batman Season 2 also had a really great last episode. Essentially it was two completely different final episodes, depending on your choices up to that point in the series, and one of the scenarios was completely insane. However, to get to that point you had to play the rest of the first two seasons, which could be described as "pretty okay I guess." Outside of that it was pretty much all crap, with Walking Dead Season 3 probably being the low point.

Look GoG, I appreciate the Yuri streak you're on, but what I really want is Umineko and Science Adventure.

What do you look for in a game?

I managed to learn Crusader Kings in this way, and learn enough of Europa Universalis to do stuff, but man Victoria is just on another level. Anyway, in terms of the main topic, I also like it when games stuff a stupid amount of detail in places where they don't need to. A good example of this is how the Super Robot Wars series will add special combat lines for characters when they use certain robots or certain special attacks, even if there's no good reason for them to be doing that. For example, in Original Generation there's no good reason to ever swap Kyosuke out of the Alteisen or Excellen out of the Weissritter. Beyond the fact that their piloting stats work extremely well in those robots (since they are both personal custom units), you can only use the dual attack Rampage Ghost when both units are piloted by their canonical pilot. Rampage Ghost is easily the best attack in the entire game, and a lot of bosses become much more difficult if you don't have access to it, so tactically the best option is to leave Excellen in the Weissritter and Kyosuke in the Alteisen. And yet, despite that, they gave custom lines for when Excellen and Kyosuke pilot other robots, and custom lines for when other characters pilot their robots. I mean, here's a ten minute video of lines from just Excellen that you'd never see unless you went out of your way: (That video also demonstrates why Excellen is the original Xiaomu). And that's just a fraction of the extra lines. It's not even all of Excellen's extra lines.

What do you look for in a game?

I like deep gameplay, where you can constantly come back and find some new quirk that you hadn't realize was there. But at the same time I'm not fond of gameplay where you need to know a whole manual before you can do anything at all (Victoria series, I'm looking at you). I guess "easy to learn, hard to master" is the cliche phrase for it. This is probably why Heroes of Might and Magic III and Alpha Centauri are still favorites of mine, all these years after release. It's also probably why I'm attracted towards hard arcade type games like danmaku. But I can go completely the other way and just play it for the story, if it's good. I've played enough visual novels or things with so little gameplay as to practically be visual novels. But even there I want the fact that it's on my computer to add to the experience. That can be a simple as just having good voice acting, or having little immersive quirks like the ability to screw around on your phone in Steins;Gate. Too many story based games are really just made because the creator isn't a good enough writer to produce a novel, and they think that having it on computer will distract you from this fact.
  24. If you don't keep ahead of the meme curve you just turn into a normie. But there's only so much room to move, so eventually you go in a circle. The only other alternative is to keep the normie away by using degeneracy, like the mlp boards do.
