Cramming is for people who don't understand the material. Studying is for those who do.

If you know something and understand it, you shouldn't need to study it again. Maybe skim back over the material to refresh your memory but by definition studying something means it's something you don't already know.

"Study" means to acquire knowledge, period. I acquired knowledge when I studied some specifics of gas-phase chromatography that I'd forgotten. Regardless, I already knew how it worked and could comfortably perform it in a lab if necessary.
