I hate to say it, but I'm glad that I got out of server hosting when I did - Valve just doesn't seem to care that there are people willing to host the game for them for free and on their terms.
 
Sure, they did apologize for screwing up everyone's server without warning, but that shouldn't have even happened if they kept some active lines of communication with the community.
