    TIAM: General Gaming edition

I was out getting a german exchange student to come to my house so I missed this. I'm not getting a key but who cares it's time to write something shitty. (Narrator) Today Stanley was going to go down a hall he'd never gone down through before. There was no signs that said that said hall was off-limits, so Stanley marched on through it. At the end of the hall there was a door that had the word "EXIT" written on the front. "Strange." thought Stanley, for this is something he does not come by very often. Stanley pushed through the door and walked out into the pitch dark. The door suddenly closed behind him, and Stanley looked around for any sources of lights. Out about 20 feet away, there appears to be a small blueish-white light floating in the air. Stanley decides to walk towards the light and it didn't take long for Stanley to realize that this light was a phone. There was a young black male holding the phone in the dark. As Stanley walked closer, the young black male said nine words to Stanley. "I'm watching The International, you want to as well?" (Narrator) Stanley, unsure of what this is, walks a bit closer to take a peek at the young male's phone. It was at this time that Stanley realized the figure of the black male now that Stanley's eyes have adjusted to the darkness. "Fascinating" thought Stanley, "This young male's build is quite the spectacle". "Man do you even know what Dota is? It may not be a good game at times, but it's a game that interests me. The name's Christopher, but most people call me Guy. And your name is?" (Narrator) Stanley did not care for these words. He never knew a man could look so dapper. Stanley decided to start feeling the man's clothing, but once he reached the man's wrist.. "Damn man, and I thought the people I talk to on the internet are weird. I'm out, see ya, weirdo". (Narrator) Stanley, defeated and confused by this short, semi-romantic encounter, watched the young male walk away with phone in hand. Stanley decides to find his way to the nearest bus stop. As Stanley approaches the bus stop and sits down on a bench, he blinks and finds himself back at his desk - nothing has changed from the time before. And with that, Stanley is ready to go on another adventure.

Can this be its own topic please? Anywho, in an effort to expand my PC gaming boundaries to go beyond just TF2 or just shooters in general, lately I've been going on a "game demo spree" of mine. As in, I download a bunch of demos for games on the Steam store for anything I'me even remotely interested in and try them out and see what it's all about, and if I enjoy what I see, I put that game on my wishlist for later. I used to do it in my XBox 360 days. So far the results have been rather interesting. So far I have somewhat obscure games, such as Lost Planet added to my wishlist, as well as non-shooters, such as Rayman Origins, to even genres of games I have had little to no experience/interest in the past, such as Tomb Raider. I even rated some of these games as higher on my wishlist than what I was really stoked about before, all due to the demos I played. Now you might ask what is the point of demos since you can just watch someone on Youtube or Twitch play the game and determine if you want it or not. To be honest however, and this goes for a good majority of games, playing the game directly can feel a lot different than watching someone else play. That is not to say watching someone else play certainly doesn't get you interested in the game, in fact, they may be the whole reason you download the demo, it's just at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself, "Do I really want to spend money/time on this game just because this guy thinks it's good, or do I think it's good enough to purchase?" Demos allow for the latter to be answered much more quickly and definitively than scouring more let's plays on YT, and searching through forums and reviews to the point where you just flip a coin and go "fuck it, I'm buying it. I Mean if everyone likes it, it must be good right?" only to find out that you wasted your money. A good example would be the FNAF series, you see all these YTers and people praising the game, then you download the demo thinking it's overrated and just want to see what the big deal is, play it, then you go "Oh I actually do enjoy this from all the subtle ambiance and gameplay", or "Meh, it is overrated, no thanks." Having a demo for a game also is a sign you have enough faith in your product to allow people to play it and risking that they might not as interested as they were when looking through YT. Which, in today's AAA industry, seems to be lacking. So yes, I do think game demos are relevant in today's industry and should be put in a lot more games because it shows you have the balls to let your customer try out your product before buying it.

    Dreams

I had a dream where I was playing a game (or more accurately the protagonist of a game) on some asteroid that was being mined and that had suffered some kind of catastrophe. At least I think that's what it was, I know it took place underground in mine shafts but there were also some high tech rooms that showed space outside. The game was kind of a combination of a 3D Fallout and survival horror game. The only place with people in it I remember was some "hub" area that led off in three separate directions. One was the way I came in, a giant room that was pitch black (I don't remember how I got through, probably by feeling my hand along the edge), one was the direction I was supposed to go to progress the story, and the final one was an abandoned mineshaft that gave me a terrifying sense of unease. There were two more shafts that led off from this one that went to the right, and one to the left. At the very back was a sign that said "Danger!" with one of the generic danger signs. There was a bottomless hole between the "hub" proper and the abandoned shaft, about 20 feet long. The only way to get to the abandoned mineshaft was by running along a twisted rail (there was a railway there before something caused the hole to form) then jumping over the last couple feet to get to the other side. Despite the difficulty there were two people on the other side, just generic NPCs from what I could tell. One was standing guard looking down the shaft and the other was patrolling a few yards into the shaft. All I know is that it creeped me the fuck out and I never went further. On a side note, all the NPCs wore the same outfit, this one: http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/d/da/Traveling_merchant.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120409212008 My mission was basically to get to the center of the complex and turn on the power or some shit. All I know is that when I reached it and flipped the switch lights came on and everyone left. There was no other person left, I wasn't sure if they had evacuated or what. All I know is I backtracked to the now-empty hub room and saw the giant room I had come through was now fully lit, and was huge, miles long and wide. There was a lot of green shit on the ground, if you've ever played Jak and Daxter and gone to the Lost Precursor City you'd see the water in it changes to a sickly green color every now and then. It was basically that. I remember my HUD said "Research facility 0.5 miles" to the right and "Exit 1.5 miles" to the left. I saved and went to the "research facility" which was a giant windmill with the Playstation buttons at the tips of its blades. Like one was an X, the other an O, etc. Still I didn't seem to be getting closer either visually or by HUD and I eventually walked along a fallen windmill towards the facility. At the end there was a jumpscare where a monster jumped out of the green shit at you, but I wasn't scared at all and kept trying to jump past it to get to the facility. Then I woke up. Better dream than the usual mundane shit at least.

    Are eSports "real" sports?

No. they're not, and no, it doesn't matter. The audiences are completely different. My dad loves watching sports, he played a lot of rugby in his younger days, but that's never something that carried through to me. He can sit and watch rugby, tennis, golf, whatever you can think of, all day. But god knows you're not gonna convince a 60 year old scottish man to sit down and watch a game of Dota for an hour, and have him think it's an actual sport. You can argue that it just requires a different type of skill to traditional sports, but guess what, when someone says sport you think of football or whatever, and that's because that's what a sport is in our society, something that requires a pretty high level of intense physical skill. There's a reason that they're called 'e-sports' and not just 'sports', and that's because like it or not they're NOT regular sports.
