This entire argument pretty much boils down to "It's a stupid feature that's completely unnecessary and does nothing to further the plot or add any real value to the game, but god dammit is it still kinda funny"
I'm only disappointed it's being removed because I wanted to laugh at the ridiculousness while actually experiencing it, not watching the ridiculousness.
The newer games have put a lot more emphasis on character relationships, but its general premise hasn't changed. Two warring nations, you take the side of the "Good guys" and fight the bad guys but also a plot is revealed that puts the entire world at risk, so not only do you win the war, but you also save the world.
