Well, we don't really actually know all that much about the actual composition of comets.  They're not quite asteroids-aka big balls of rock or metal.  They're sometimes described as big space snowballs, which while being a gross oversimplification is kinda close to the mark.  But besides that, we didn't even know if we could even land on a comet until yesterday-there were worries that the probe would simply sink into the surface, or any other number of catastrophic events.  Now that Philae's up and running, we're going to get so much stuff about what makes these things work.

Like Kay said, it was also practice for other things.  The probe carried an experimental harpoon landing system.  Basically you fire at the object and reel yourself in with it.  I don't think it actually worked (I believe it failed to fire?) but it's an idea that's been suggested to use when landing on smaller bodies.  Remember, shit like asteroids or comets have negligible gravity, so even if we can get into an orbit around one, that doesn't necessarily mean that landing is going to be easy (or even possible) with the aid of what little gravity there is.  This is a system designed to land and attach probes (and maybe eventually spacecraft) in situations where you can't trust the object you're landing on to keep you stuck to itself.

The Rosetta probe has successfully landed on Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. It didn't secure itself properly, however, and wound up bouncing, placing it in a possibly unstable location with less than ideal sunlight.
Here're some of the pictures from the probe.

XKCD had a cute little play-by-play comic about it. You can see all of the panels here

It's a mindblowing achievement, given the distances involved. It will be interesting to see what they make of the situation.

    Okay, not really.
But it might be more accurate than you think.

I was 14 when you first met me. And being a 14 year old is not a good way to make a first impression. I'll be the first to admit that I was a total jackass. I was argumentative, opinionated, whiny, and immature. In short, not fun to share a forum with.

I apologize for that. In fact, I'm certain that I have something to apologize individually to every one of you for. My memory isn't good enough to know what they are, but I'm sorry for whatever it is.

I'm 17 now. I'd like to think that I'm not the same person now that I was then. I believe I've changed in a lot of ways, some immediately evident, some not.

If you'd be willing to give me a chance to, I'd like to try to prove it to you.

If not, then I'll see you on the flip side.

Yeah, I want to say they touched on this in the Republic/Imperial Commando series? Basically the master set of DNA from Jango Fett deteriorated over time (and there may or may not have been some sabotage involved) so as the clones started hitting the end of their hyper-shortened lifespans, the Empire needed to start conscripting actual soldiers, as well as cloning from other, non-Jango sources.  Basically the average lifespan of a clone was something like 25-35 years, but the rate of development exponentially grew towards the end of the clone's life.  So basically old age took a clone in a year or two, instead of a few decades.   This was something they were trying to circumvent when Imperial Commando (the book series) got axed.  It's heavily implied (if not outright stated) that they had some degree of success, as Jaing Skirata, an ARC trooper, survives to 40 ABY and shows up in the Legacy of the Force series.

Are you even serious right now?  Half the forum's calling you out, people are calling for you to step down, and you're acting like this is just some data that you were able to collect?  I'm sorry, but I have serious reservations about letting someone run this forum who just admitted to saying that he deliberately took something went too far, but golly gee I learned some interesting things about people today because of it, everyone!  Frankly, it's mildly disturbing.

I don't really know whether I'm royally pissed off or just apathetic at the moment.

The announcement was such an extreme distortion of what you'd normally see from Commander that I couldn't take it seriously whatsoever. Things went south when he started to refute these claims without the slightest hint of satire. Once everyone was truly taking it seriously, we took all of the insanity that ensued as nothing more than the symptoms of a disastrous plan.

The multiple-sites trick was interesting, but we hardly heeded your requests to try posting on the forums because we assumed it was just more of the same disinterested corporate drivel. I thought I was looking at a Discourse board; it was really a NodeBB board. When I asked Commander why it was showing a NodeBB copyright, he offered nothing in the way of an explanation.

To be fair, I should have caught on at that point.

So here we are, unable to even half-heartedly laugh at the utter farce that this whole event was. Commander, you don't understand what a joke is. A joke does not spawn eleven pages of disbelief and anger. You should've pulled the plug on day one- or done something that was actually comedic. Your corporate jargon was atrocious yet still insufficient to convey that it truly was satire.

I do believe that Rynjin's complaints have some merit, although people are saying we didn't Commander seriously at first blush- it was only after he kept up the straight-faced act that we figured he really was serious. That's a problem insofar as we were willing to believe he'd do something so ridiculous, but at least we didn't fall for it instantly.

    ...or did we?

Looking back at the first few pages, DualJay was the first to really call the whole Next thing out as a joke. I was the second. Expresate also brought it up.

And, well, things broke down from there. This is a problem, Commander.

You've grown detached from the community and gained a sour reputation- a common complaint among people I've talked with. I don't see you around the forums all that much, and when you do show up it seems that controversy is quick to follow. Your public warning of Guy was particularly egregious.

So no, I'm not going to laugh at you. I'm not going to curse you out, either, despite my initial urge to do so (Huff can attest).

I'm just going to wait and see what happens.

So, Cmdr, did you learn anything from this? I'm asking you seriously.

You propose a ridiculous, radical change to the forum's structure, a total move/re-model, with you doing nothing but spouting corporate speak and vague platitudes.

Nobody finds this at all out of character for you.

Do you fully understand the implications of that?

Nobody was surprised by this. This parody of yourself is what everyone ACTUALLY SEES YOU AS. Because it's very similar to how you've acted in the past.

This, this right here is, in a nutshell, why everyone is always so pissed at you. The fact that it was a "joke" this time is irrelevant. Well, no it's not. It's a joke in especially poor taste because you obviously KNOW that at least part of the community lives in fear of you one day deciding to make some sweeping change nobody asked for, that was discussed with no one that will alienate some or all of the people who frequent this forum.

Enough is enough with this shit. You said a while back that you were willing to stand down from an administrative position if that was the community's will.

Do you still stand by that? Because I personally have lost what little faith I had in you with this. I'm sure at least some of the people here agree.

You're not a bad person, Cmdr, I like having you around...but you being in charge of things just makes me nervous.

Commander, when has suddenly suddenly forcing changes on this community been a good idea? When has anyone on this forum been accepting of hard and fast, radical changes without their input, consent, or at the very least timely notification? Remember the April Fool's banning? Sure it was done with joking intentions, but a lot of us stayed up that night because we were scared o the radical change. The move to IPB was better since some of us had experience with the system, but it's just... as a leader you should know your constituents.

And fuck, treat your constituents with respect. There are life really about 45 of us on here. You are missing out on one of the best advantages of such a small group- you can communicate very easily with all of us, graduall work through changes and gather input on what is wanted or desired. Instead, you just go ahead and make radical changes without informing anyone ahead o time! Not even the mods! We're staff- it'd be nice to know what kind of business we'll be expected to do in the future!

Look, I know you have good intentions. I know you want this community to be good and to grow and be your baby. I know that in the end, it's YOU who calls the shots.

But your leadership is terrible. A leader doesn't hide things or act so stiffly with their flock, especially with a group so small and tight-knit as this. Treat us as freinds and equals instead of just peasants who are subject to any change you will. (I say us instead of them because at this point I feel that we mods are basically regular members with a few extra tools- we aren't told about anything bit as I mentioned).

Realize what this community is- a treehouse of friends here to have conversations about stuff and just shoot the shit in our off hours. We don't need to grow larger, we don't neccessarily want to become more streamlined. We're just a secret club, like it or not. Some things you want to introduce are good! The move to the current board was good- it has statuses, good themes, bigger avatars, and other things. Just run it by people well ahead of time and ask what people want.

I understand that you want what's best for this community. I know you do. But you're blind to what his community is and you refuse to give any leeway or listen to your flock. This is bad leadership.
