I caught the first episode of it (as my new housemates are big on anime) and they did not seem very pleased with it either. I found it boring, but I have a natural resistance to anime so I delegated to their opinions over mine (which was "I preferred The Matrix.") A lot of stuff made me scratch my head or just roll my eyes, with the headsets that somehow got mass produced without anyone noticing that it can fucking kill you, and the villain being so mysterious and enigmatic that I couldn't care less about him. Forgot his name and pretty much everything he said five seconds after he left. Besides some pretty designs and animation, it didn't grip me at all. Didn't see any of that stuff in the first episode besides the slow pace, but I'd take your word for it. Then they watched some Kaiji. I have literally zero taste in anime, so I have no idea if it's "good" or "bad", but hell, I found it pretty damn entertaining. No idea why, really. I like gambling, so that probably helps, but I think it's also the main character being so flawed (which is good since, as Gigolo noted above, perfect protagonists are really boring), the bizarre situations he was in (like being forced to work in an underground mine because he's in debt) and the high stakes of simple stuff (like the main drama of an entire episode being that he can't resist the urge to buy beer.) It's hard to describe, but I think I started "getting into it" when there was a money tornado. Yeah. Wouldn't watch it regularly, but I'm glad I saw it.

Besides the rape/underage/incest fanservice, the main character being the biggest Mary Sue in all of fiction, horrible pacing in the first season, a cringe worthy love story that comes from nowhere, all the female characters wanting to fuck the main character, their "daughter" Yui, the second season trying to turn the villain who killed thousands into a good guy, the horrible universe building (mainly the first season bringing up stories or elements of the game that are never mentioned again), being pretty sexist even by anime standards, or how the character is so strong there's never any actual suspense?
