Little 1000 word thing about a setting where an ordinary human tries to just get on with their life in an unusual setting. Spoiler Megan was sat between a harpy and a naga on her way to work today. This was her normal Monday morning, in which she rode the Cloverton Bus #808 to the Cloverton Public Library. It wasn’t always a harpy or a naga - sometimes it could be an elderly woman with fangs, or a little boy with a tail and horns - but it was always the same story, as the girl was wedged between two people with extraordinary powers or supernatural appearances, while she was still yawning from her ordinary human lack of energy and scratching at the itchs in her coat and jeans. Megan was the 1% of Cloverton that was not the least bit special in any way. Megan liked it that way. The bus jutted around a sharp corner and the harpy man was sent knocking into Megan’s side. He began apologising profusely at the claw mark he had left in her coat, but Megan just waved it off and got back to staring dead ahead and wishing that this bus ride would end already. It seemed that the battle between the kaiju and the giant robot from last Friday had left some of the main roads in the north part of the town completely ruined, so the bus route had been changed to accommodate it. Like most buses, it had chosen a route very stupid and impractical, and like most buses, it was running late. After a few more elbow-bumping knee-jostling minutes, the bus ride mercifully ended, and Megan was the first to push her way to the door and free herself from her prison. Taking in one last breath of the city air, she stepped into the library and the stifling silence and musty aura welcomed her inside, much to her disappointment. Maybe one day, just one of these fucking days, a supervillain will finally be a hero and blow this place up. I’d get compensation from the insurance, right? I better. “Ms. Bennett?” An old crone cawwed at her. It was Ms. Barburn, the elderly harpy woman that ran the front desk, and Megan’s boss. Megan waited patiently for the rest of the incoming storm. “You are aware of the time, aren’t you? You can read a clock and understand what the big hand and the little hand mean, am I right?” “Yeah, and you are aware that I don’t drive the damn bus, am I right?” Megan retaliated, the anger of her morning already seeping through with no subtlely whatsoever. Ms. Barburn furrowed her brow, her wrinklies multiplying by several factors as she did. “Ms. Bennett, that attitude is not what we condone here at the-” “Then do you want to keep having a scene with me at the entrance, in front of our guests-” Megan said, gesturing to the few library patrons around her, who were now watching the scene unfold with silent judgment. “-Or would you like to let me go and do my damn job already?” Ms. Barburn’s mouth jutted open and Megan braced herself for another rush of hot wind, but the woman’s eyes darted to the visitors watching her, and her jaw slowly returned to whence it came. She gave a snarling look of disapproval at her newest member of the sacred library working crew, and then cocked her head to the side, telling Megan to leave before she changed her mind. Megan happily obliged, walking past her and further into the library. She had no doubt that Ms. Barburn would chew her out later, but Megan knew that she wouldn’t be fired - the library was a government-paid building, and most of the yearly budget was now going towards more crucial buildings for structural reinforcement and greater security, due to the rise in monster attacks over the last few months. The library was underappreciated and, more importantly, understaffed. It was one of the very few places that would accept Megan as a “C-grade non-altered non-powered human female with a foul temper.” Megan rounded the corner of the Young Romance section and, as she had fully anticipated, her co-worker was already double-checking that the books were correctly ordered. “Hey, Megan!” Lana said, not looking away from her duties. “I heard that commotion over there,” Her ears twitched instinctively, and Megan had no doubt that she was right - with her super sense of hearing, Lana probably heard Megan coughing as she got off the bus outside. She briefly wondered on how poetic it was that an anthropomorphic wolf girl could easily track her. “I hope you’re not in trouble.” “Probably,” Megan admitted. “But I’m used to that.” Lana nodded in agreement. Even from a young age, Megan had been ‘temperamental towards authority figures’ and ‘intentionally seeking out disruptive outlets.’ She didn’t play well with others, she didn’t like taking orders, and she was always looking for ways to bend the rules or break them entirely. Having an occupation had tamed Megan’s wild side, but it still scratched and pawed from inside its cage now and then, whenever someone felt the urge to prod it with a stick. “Well, luckily, it feels like it’s going to be a slow day,” Lana mused, struggling to reach the higher shelves. Megan rolled her eyes and began to help out at the higher levels, where her ‘beanstalk’ physique was better suited than Lana’s short and chubby posture. “Thanks.” “Let’s hope,” Megan mused. “I feel like shit today.” “Sorry.” “It’s not your fault.” The two girls followed their orders (Lana doing so diligently and with a smile, with Megan trailing behind and trying to look busy) until the clock read twelve. Lana wagged her tail as she noticed the time. “Oh, awesome! I’ve been starving since I missed breakfast. Harry’s for lunch like always?” Megan tutted and shook her head. “You didn’t hear? The place nearly got burnt down on the weekend when some kid with fireballs threw a tantrum. They got insurance, but it’s still gonna be closed down for at least a week or two.” Lana’s ears drooped against her head. “Aw. They had a deal going on for Mondays.” “Yeah,” Megan said, already stepping outside and brandishing a cigarette - her sweet reward for three hours in non-smoking confinement. “Might as well go to town, see if there’s anywhere new to try. Come on.” A drop of rain slapped down into the pavement just in front of Megan, who retracted her foot in disgust as a few more followed. Her eyes crawled upwards to look at the grey clouds overhead, and rain began its slow but steady downfall on the two of them. Lana shook her wolfen fur instinctively, while the Cloverton Bus #808 passed by without stopping. Megan sighed, drawing deeply from her cigarette, as two robots duelled with each other overhead amongst the skyscrapers. It was none of her concern - she wanted to get some lunch. It was a Monday afternoon for Megan. Haven't really bothered with editing, just trying to get a feel for things. -
